The next episode of Die Shrink will see us be joined once again by MelodicWarrior to discuss the future of XBOX. MelodicWarrior has extensively read up on those leaked XBOX emails, has some connections in the industry, and just in general is well read on the subject of next-gen consoles.

Specifically, we plan to talk about what we can gather about XBOX's new leadership, the future of the brand, and for fun - is next-gen coming "too soon"?

What is the internal sentiment at Microsoft and its studios? I remember a couple months ago, when a lotta people there were looking to leave and find employment elsewhere, to beat MS to the punch with the layoffs. How are they taking the leadership turmoil?

Xbox is a gateway drug to Windows users in my opinion. Do you think Microsoft can never close its gaming division because it has been an integral part of bringing users into their ecosytem?

If Microsoft goes ahead and winds Xbox down this generation and they stop making consoles and turn to PC gaming and being a publisher, does it make sense to keep the Xbox brand? Has the brand name really retained any power after all that's happened so far?

Hello Tom and MelodicWarrior. Since it's very likely that the new Xbox will be leaning on A.I features. What will be some A.I features, Microsoft can implement. That will be useful or enjoyable to use for gamers.

We are in season for Windows 12 rumors, what are the chances the next version of Windows is actually related to the new Xbox OS and we'll have a convergence of software development to smooth over the transition from Xbox to PC?

Hello Tom, What do you think the state of Crossgen games will look like and what will they be limited by in the PS6 era?, additionally how long should we expect it to last if the hypothetical release date for next gen is 2029?

Given recent advancements generative AI for converting images into textured 3D models and environments, do you think there's a chance Microsoft could be a bit reasonable, and focus its AI gaming efforts on making AI powered game dev tooling? I feel like there's a path there for making people understand why it's an acceptable/good thing.

Everyone especially PC gamers should be praying that PS6 does not get delayed. PlayStation is the number one platform whether people want to believe it or not. 95% of game development prioritizes PS and it's feature set. If PS6 is capable of path tracing or at a minimum full RT, then future games will have RT/PT as the only two options, this should also shave at least a year off development times. There is no point to Nvidia's 80, & 90 series cards if console development will limit their true potential.

BespokeEP

This is why I also believe that cross gen for single player games, especially Sony 1st party will be extremely minimal or completely non existent. People thinking that the PS6P (calling it) won't be able to handle Full RT/PT are forgetting that it's likely going to render everything at 640p, maybe lower, and use PSSR to hit 1080p or whatever res the screen is.

Tinfoil hat moment. It was a joke at first but putting the new head of Xbox's extensive gaming credentials together with the NPU on the die, all signals are copilot driven ads right? If they can't monetize it with games, they'll monetize it with ads and user data. . .

This generation was off to a slow start due to the pandemic and then poor decisions by Sony to dump money into failed live service projects. That decision robbed us of an entire Naughty Dog dev cycle not to mention closing Bluepoint. Asha Sharma seems disingenuous at best. This next Xbox is going to become like their Surface products. Products you can buy but don’t meaningfully matter. Do you think it’s possible for Sony to return to good stewardship of their studios, or is Herman Hulst too out of touch? With the economy, do you think Xbox will price out the majority of its users? 2027 isn’t too soon for new consoles, do you think there will be even more people who wait due to price and an extended cross-gen period?

I’ve put this before but I think it shows how bad Xbox is at this moment, I had a literal boycott on PlayStation because I bought a PS1 at circuit city in high school it died less then 5 days after getting it and neither Sony or Circuit City would help me(where service is state of the art my ass) I have not bought any PlayStation product since them, in Nov I went on EBay and bought a PS5 after Series X prices went Up. I have bought every Xbox until the series S/X and Xbox never gave me a reason to upgrade from my 1S with SSD upgrade I did. I was even a day 1 gamepass sub. I’m the person Xbox almost couldn’t lose and tgey have done such a piss poor job I have moved to PlayStation. They didn’t have to do anything just be Mid and they couldn’t do that.

You know we only have Astro Bot, Ghost of Yotei, Wolverine, Saros, intergalactic, DS2, Physint, God of War remake and HD2 actually releasing thanks to Hermen. And he has also seemingly saved Bungie, which is the number 3 best selling game on Steam globally. Hermen does not assign studios projects, every studio is free to pitch whatever they would like. Saros anyone?? If a studio feels compelled to pitch a live service title because they think that is the only way they will get something approved says to me that they couldn't think of anything good or maybe just maybe they wanted to make a live service game.. what a concept that a dev would actually want to make the kind of game that they would want to play. Like it or not 10 live service games account for close to 60% of PlayStation's yearly revenue, and with every gen gamers are getting younger and younger, younger gamers only care about service games. So how does PlayStation get new younger gamers interested in PS? By being the maker of their favourite service game. If you think PS gamers only care about single player games why do most SP games only sell to 5-15% of the install base? You really think that will be sustainable in the future with development costs going up up up? And you really think that anyone who replaces Hermen (who loves single player games) isn't going to follow the same orders from the top of Sony and continue looking for live Service success?

BespokeEP

Also why are you blaming Hermen for anything released at the beginning of this gen? Those were Shu, just like Concord was shu
