Maybe Tom is "Joker Brained" because it's 5am after a long day of work...but he apparently wants the subject of the next Die Shrink to be a wild card episode...propose interesting scenarios for Tom & Dan to debate over...  Here are some examples of what we mean:

What if Arrow Lake launched in ONE MONTH with a 30% performance boost...what would that mean for AMD?

What if XBOX bought Square Enix this year, and then removed SE games from PlayStation?

What if PlayStation launched a Handheld next year?

What if Nintendo launched a 20 TFLOP handheld this fall?!

What if Navi 48 defeats the RTX 5080 and is sold for $499 in 8 months?

For the love of God, do not assume those questions are meant to be the center of gravity of this episode...but they are examples of what we are talking about.

Right before we hit a "News Lull", let's re-center ourselves with some hypotheticals.  You have ~12 hours to submit below!  Be respectful, use good grammar, and be as concise as possible to have your submission considered!

One or both Next Gen consoles use 3D V-Cache to boost processing capability (particularly on CPU heavy games) since AMD's process is mature now, and as a result, games that start on console are optimized for a high-cache environment, making X3D CPUs even better for gaming than they already are.

What if AMD had a Zen moment with GPUs and AI (software)?

coltmarshmallow

What if apple partnered with amd instead of creating their own arm chips?

Joker or Riddler?

Now that ARM has gone public and is presumably beholden to their shareholders, what's stopping Jensen from slowly buying his way into a controlling stake or even a hostile takeover, without pursuing an outright acquisition of the whole company?

Do you think the performance uplift coming from the Snapdragon X Elite might prompt MS to concentrate on Windows on Snapdragon and let it have it's moment? Right now I love the concept but frankly in the enterprise sector the app compatibility is terrible and battery life suffers when you have to emulate.....and that's even if it's possible.

Chris Rijk

Let's say it's 2015 and you were given $10Bn and 10 years to develop a completely new console. You can either go full custom hardware route or partner with existing companies but the goal is to provide the maximum performance for a chosen BOM cost. What strategy do you think would give the best results? (ie what cost would you target, what performance aspects would you choose to focus on the most, would you partner or go custom, what would the hardware design roughly look like)

Intel fabs discovers a way around the theoretical 1NM node minium by preventing the quantum tunneling effect today, 3 full years before TSMC will discover the same thing. Who gets a server processor out on a below 1 nm node size first, Intel or AMD?

Chris Rijk

Let’s say that somehow all software in the world was completely deleted. Everything. Not just games, but all productivity tools, all software development tools like compilers, operating systems and even BIOS and firmware code. However, all existing hardware and knowledge is kept. How long do you think it would take until games reach the level they’re at now?

Trogdor

What if Nintendo allowed its games to be on other platforms (Steam, Xbox, Playstation)? What if this includes a massive backlog of games from older generations?

Eric Bagely

Sony and Samsung in collaboration with Amd introduce an Ai upscaling technology that is on par with Dlss and Fsr. This technology is included with all 2024 tvs and beyond.

What if quantum computing was actually able to break the most secure encryption algorithms? (Any password could be cracked, any secure VPN connection could be compromised, all web traffic becomes insecure, any files on any hard drive could be accessed, all Private Keys of Bitcoin wallets are known alongside Public Keys) What if these tools were just as accessible as modern high-end hardware is now?

Szolo

What if there a fundamental flaw would be found inside CUDA interface that would cripple its effectiveness similar to what happened with the Intel Core architecture.

What happens to the monitor market if QDEL monitors up to 32 inches are released in Q4 2024/Q1 2025, and they're at least as good price/performance as the $280 MiniLED monitor Monitors Unboxed recommended?

What if Microsoft did buy square Enix and removed games from Playstation?

Falto

What if Dan and Tom were respective amd and Nvidia fan boys, who'd be which and why?

TechnoLadz

What if AMD revived Crossfire with RDNA 4, and made it work well; managing for two top N48s to outperform the 5090.

TechnoLadz

What if N48 refers to just the GCD itself - like how N31 refers to just the GCD (hence why 7900M is N31 based even though it has the package size and memory modules amount of N32), and AMD uses a package which can hold two N48 modules.

TechnoLadz

What if RDNA 5 comes out in April 2025 for the high end cards. Jumping Nvidia. Meaning they have a "Project Tungsten" (because Tungsten is the only metal stronger than Titan(ium) card. Also because Project Tungsten is meant to beat a Blackwell Titan by at least 30%; it uses HBM4 - bringing it back to the "mainstream" for the first time in over 5 years (I say Mainstream in quotation marks, as since it is meant to compete with a Blackwell Titan in price, would likely be over $2999)

SaltyInternetPirate

What if Battlemage came out this holiday and it worked almost as good as RDNA 4

TechnoLadz

What if AM6 is bigger than AM5; let's say AM6 is 55mm x 55mm, allowing for quad channel memory and Halo APUs to be socketed. This would also be enough for AMD to perhaps combine ThreadRipper CPUs and Mainstream ones on to a single board; using dense cores. Presuming all the following use the Zen 6 Successor cores and DDR6, you could have the following: You could have: 3 ThreadRipper SKUs: Up to 64C, no iGPU 4 Game-Eater SKUs (Halo APU based): Up to 24 Cores, 84 RDNA 6 CUs 6 Ryzen SKUs: Up to 24 Cores, 12 RDNA 6 CUs 6 Non-Halo APU SKUs: Up to 16 Cores, 24 RDNA 6 CUs

What if Nvidia decides to handle its endless Ampere oversupply by making the Switch 2 have a GA107 eGPU built into the dock and running SLI with the GPU in the APU? Will they be willing to take an L by dumping them cheaply in Nintendo's new console?

TechnoLadz

What if Intel bought Nvidia in 2011, and talks had started during Fermi.

TechnoLadz

What if Nintendo were the first customers to get TSMC 2nm node, and launched early next year; for a Switch 2 Pro. Could Nvidia make an APU on TSMC 2nm perform like a 4070 Super?

TechnoLadz

What if, when Sony was working with Nintendo to create the next gen console (mid 90s), when Nintendo had violated their contract; for violating their contract, Sony got the rights to Mario?

Dark Helmet

What if Arrow Lake was power efficient, included an updated version of Thread Director that made e-cores genuinely useful for gaming, and made the incorporation of APO simple for developers?

Treble Sketch

What if some company (Valve?) decides to put Strix Halo or even Zen 6 + RDNA 6 into a standalone VR headset? Would that beat out the Apple Vision Pro or how would the gaming performance be like at full power vs limited to 10 or 30W?

Resident Mexican

I feel like if Intel were to launch Arrow Lake next month with a 30% performance boost, it would be a lot like Zen 2 vs Coffee Lake Refresh. Where the 9900K is much more expensive than the 2700X but offered more performance. Which is exactly how a 15900k would be faster than a 7800X3D but the 7800X3D is cheaper. If this happened, people will definitely regard Intel better, but it won't really matter in terms of sales if the products are too expensive. The price to performance of products like the 15700k and 15600k will be the determining factors if Arrow Lake is successful, and I don't believe Intel could match the price to performance of a 7800X3D for $350 or less. And that's not even considering Zen 5 launching later this year, which would be like Zen 3 coming to be at the same performance but cheaper than Arrow Lake. But if Arrow Lake costs around the same than that's a win for all consumers. Enough about my thoughts on this, what are yours?

TechnoLadz

You accidentally replied to my comment 🤣

Trevor Renfro

What is ASML started their own (separate yet partner) company to compete with TSMC and Intel?

Resident Mexican

I feel like if Intel were to launch Arrow Lake next month with a 30% performance boost, it would be a lot like Zen 2 vs Coffee Lake Refresh. Where the 9900K was much more expensive than the 2700X but offered more performance, like a 15900k to a 7800X3D. If this happened, people will definitely regard Intel better, but I don't think it will move the needle much if Arrow Lake cpu's are too expensive. The price to performance of products like the 15700k and 15600k eill have at least match if not beat the 7800X3D $350 or less. And that's not even considering Zen 5 which should match or beat Arrow Lake for presumably lower prices. So in all honesty it will be more of a flash in the pan if anything, but what are your thoughts?

Dark Helmet

What if Apple Vision Pro sells out quickly? Would that mean something regarding the future of VR/MR?

What if the various schemes for reducing cable clutter, such as Asus BTF, take off? What would that mean for the future of the ATX form factor?

2026-09-17 17:00 What if AMD's Bulldozer was actually really good? Where do you think Intel and AMD would be right now? Would Radeon also be in better position?

QuickJumper

What if AMD never bought ATI?

Chris Rijk

What if Moore's Law had never died? ie the underlying improvements in process technology and costs had continued on the same exponential rate of improvement.

Cammi Hudson

What if Navi 48 defeats the RTX 5080 and is sold for $499 in 8 months? There would be people camping out at the local Microcenter again like they did for the 3090 launch and all through the 3000 series of GPU's where we lined up hours ahead of the opening and sat in the store for hours while the staff sorted and categorized all the days shipments just to get a chance at a Nvidia card. I would gladly do this again just for that card.

Chris Rijk

What if for some reason you could no longer use Windows for any gaming - what would you use instead? How do you think games developers would react if Windows was suddenly no longer an option?

Chris Rijk

What if process technology stopped improving at all after the 286 came out (on 1.5µm). Ie the only way to increase transistors on a chip would be to make a bigger chip.

Matt Lamon

What if AI chip demand fell off a cliff and Nvidia has to price their cards to sell in larger quantities?

Jen-Hsun Huang, AI is not circular

Yes. AMD froze/reduced all R&D spending outside of on Zen shortly after Piledriver launched. This directly impacted everything after Hawaii (290/x) until RDNA2. Part of the reason Nvidia won so much marketshare is Maxwell gained a large lead and pascal build on that. In a world where Radeon could have maintained their R&D they likely would have stayed in their 35-45% marketshare and close to or beating Nvidia depending on the gen.

Cammi Hudson

What if AMD Piledriver cpu's were as good as Zen/ Zen +

Matt Lamon

My entire block is a 4090 die size?

concon305

what if m4 releases this fall and is better at gaming than the 5090/ 8900 xt

Tim Gallagher

What if Battlemage comes out in Q4 2024 and they are able to match NVIDIA's 50 series performance at each tier on average, but their drivers still can't run certain games.

Nicholas Buckner

X3D was the pet project of one AMD Engineer. What if they didn't invent this?

Nicholas Buckner

What Nvidia keeps the multiple interfaces for decades, like Windows keeps around old Control Panel items?

Chris Rijk

Let's say you have $100m to invest in the development of one or more games. What sorts of games would you seek to get developed and with what financial model?

Nicholas Buckner

What if AMD's mountain bike was reviewed by Steve from Gamer's Nexus positively? What other products would AMD have started?

Eric Bagely

As read by Mr. Leather Jacket himself: Introducing "Nvid AI", the next evolution of graphics for gamers! What if Intel 10nm was on time? How would the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th Gen looked and performed hypothetically? Would they have gone to the heterogenous architecture or waited?

Arknia08

Let's just imagine that RDNA4 is better than expected compared to Blackwell. Better performance/RT, lower power draw, better upscaling, ROCm in everything that also supports CUDA, more ram, actual overclocking (reversing whatever the hell they did with RDNA3). How much of a premium do you guys think AMD could command over Blackwell? Considering Nvidia's mindshare.

Oliver Ternavský

What would happened if we reached theorerical limit of transistors in next 10 years and couldnt advance our computing abilities more . How would PC industry change?

Pattycakes

What if AMD got a CUDA compatibility layer on all of their hardware, so every GPU from the 5000 series and above could run the same compute operations as Nvidia? What do you think would happen to the GPU landscape for desktop or server?

Cammi Hudson

What if Arrow Lake doesn't come out on desktop and offers less than 10% uplift from Meteor Lake?

Gergely

What if Strix Halo can be made in high numbers and is avaliable widely in barebones sometime next year? Could Microsoft put a sticker on it and call it the next Xbox before Sony launches anything?

Hal Bouma

I could see AMD really competing against nVidia for dGPUs and Blackwell. Because nVidia is laughing to the bank as its data center revenue grows by AMD's entire quarter revenue right now. With that said, I still like my what if scenario from Discord. What if MS signs with AMD to design the next XBox CPU/GPU and has Intel fab it.
