The battle had gone as poorly as they'd feared, the casualties mounting and the morale of the survivors failing quickly. The smell of burnt ozone, singed flesh, and desperation hung in the air as languidly as the acrid scent of unbidden releases. Those lurid little thoughts that flared in the minds of the Troopers giving birth to violent reactions to their sudden destruction.

The enemy had come well prepared, and the dated blasters of the dwindling troopers could barely keep up. They scored their kills in turn, but the enemy had brought something new... something devastating. A repurposed mining device, the sheer power of it made it more than capable of piercing more than one body at a time, and more than once Troopers found themselves skewered as readily by the sizzling beam as any lance or spear.

The retreat continued...

But even as their sisters fell around them, the survivors realized they were quickly running out of space to retreat...
