This month, we said a little prayer for you, Listeners! For the July exception, we're bringing you one of the definitive romcoms of the 1990s and talking about the four years of the Dramatic and Musical/Comedy Original Score categories, Rupert Everett's place in the Best Supporting Actor race, Cameron Diaz's underrated comedic genius in the film, and the film's place in the Julia Roberts filmography.

When I hear “Jell-O”, I think orange.

Well, this made my day! This is an absolute family favorite.

“Who’s chasing you? Nobody” is a family mantra

It's so funny-odd that once the Academy's music branch says, "𝑊𝑒 don't want the song and score categories to ONLY be won by Disney either," and splits Score in two, the Disney momentum stops - and they 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 nominated THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, HERCULES, and MULAN for more than 1 category apiece. I wonder how often you two hit that, "Can we do ____?" "Nope, Comedy Score/Drama Score nomination!" bump when talking over possible future episodes. Anyway, Danny Elfman's one of my favorites, and without the split, he might not have gotten his first 2 (out of 3) nominations, so I'm glad it happened. Of course, all of this is very disregardable if it comes up in the episode that I am about to listen to now. (Also, yes, this + AUSTIN POWERS is absolutely the double to go with, though IN '97, I'd have desperately wanted the BATMAN & ROBIN/THE LOST WORLD double - BATMAN & ROBIN being, I'm pretty sure, the first movie I ever saw in a theater more than once).

You didn't mention the most egregious thing Michael does: he removes the stuck ring from Jules' finger with his MOUTH! And then marries someone else with that same ring!

Hunter Harris of food took me out 🙏🏻

“He just came down for a few hours to uh… fuck me” best movie of all time

No Way

Jello is cherry flavored to me. Those jello molds make me this of a white jello with bits of stuff in them.

I love this movie, reminds me so warmly of my late mom. Plus I still listen to the sound track!

David

One of my favorite movies. I’ve seen it so many times. It really captured lightning in a bottle

Julie

I have hated this movie since it came out but your podcast was so fun that i decided to rewatch the movie and enjoyed it! A couple of fun things I caught- the union station scene was clearly meant to allude to the baby carriage scene in the untouchables. Also Harry Shearer cameo! Finally Julia's clothes- exactly back in style again. As a chicagoan it was fun to see the sites of that era.

Not Joe sideways entering into the "Gay men are all in open relationships because they're all whores! Why am I the only one [generic Twitter gay of this type, NOT Joe Reid] with the morals and sense to only want a TRUE relationship, which is monogamy!" Discourse! (BTW, do whatever feels fine to you, monogamous, open, polyamorous lawyering, or whatever! Just don't judge and look down on other people's choices in relationship configuration!) Chris's swear jar is definitely "Isabelle Huppert."

David Kirk

Great episode. I love this film has an old fashioned 1950s - 1960s type title scene with people not in the movie. Which is something you expect to see more in a John Waters movie.

Betty

Always despised this movie, but if I can think of every nonsensical, contrived plot occurrence as "magical realism" maybe I'll come around.

Carrie Williams

I’m glad you asked! Kimmie doesn’t have bridesmaids because she alienated ALL of her sorority sisters by sleeping with Michael who was in an exclusive relationship with their most beloved chapter President and they ALL took the other girl’s side.

Re: Joe's opinion that Julia won her Oscar for the right role, can you think of any actors who won for the right role? Versus the ones who won "make up" oscars

Did I pause this episode to go play “I say a little Prayer” on the piano three times in a row while mildly intoxicated? YESSSSS I DIDDDDD

Alexis

The fact that some people don’t like this movie came as an absolute shock to me. MY best friend and I saw it two nights in a row at our local small town Iowa theater we loved it so much. Extra special bonus points to this episode for helping me find my way back to one of my favorite albums of my childhood: the soundtrack to Waterworld. A sincere thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Late 90s NY saw three notable woman with fabulous tasting clothes, questionable taste in men and a vague job at a magazine: Julianne Potter, Elaine Benes, and Carrie Bradshaw. What do we think their relationship was in the surprisingly small world of the late 90s literati?

Ronald Bass did with screenwriting what Zimmer now does with composing. He had (has?) a stable of young writers who come up with premises and drafts and he’ll pick things to develop more and do the final work (supposedly). Zimmer has younger composers knocking out motifs and he’ll harvest stuff to use in final scores.

Liesl

I'm a little surprised that Paul Giamatti as Richard the bellhop didn't come up, but your discussion was excellent and thorough as always! Fingers crossed for a future episode devoted to Muriel's Wedding.

John Ananias

Hey, this episode will prove helpful to Garys who also play the box office game (certainly did for me just now)!

Philip

Great episode. I'm tickled that it shares a director with Muriel's Wedding. :)

Until listening to this episode, I hadn't realised Rachel Griffiths is one of the cousins! 27 year blind spot!
