Oh! So I presume you are gonna summarize this year’s Oscars on the 28th or so? Cos I forgot About that housekeeping post from last year for a brief second Heh

Not to "on behalf of Katey Rich" here, but as a fellow FIRST MAN fan, I must say that although it received 4 Oscar nominations, it did not do well enough.

speaking of “year ahead buzz” i recall robbie being the presumed best actress front runner for babylon from like, a year ahead and even solidly through the first half of 2022…

Still have no idea how The Favourite wasn’t even shortlisted for Makeup/Hair (and unless I missed it, didn’t get brought up here either)

Think both Chris and Joe are right that the screenplay really lets the movie down. The 2018 movie is very indebted to the superior 1971 movie with Vanessa Redgrave as Mary and Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth. It’s from that movie that the scene where the two queens meet comes from. It’s also from that version that Darnley being a bisexual fuck boy comes from. Played by a blonde Timothy Dalton. Ian Holm plays David Rizzio.

We need to talk about what went on with Josie Rourke taking her name off The Nan Movie…

I’m sad for Demi but otherwise generally enjoyed the ceremony and Conan, and how nice to have a host who seemed to genuinely care about and appreciate movies!

And a big Saorise fan—want happiness and good things for her and her career!

I remember watching this at the Paris in nyc and the audience was all boomers who seemed SUPER into it.

The "we could have ruled as SESTERS!" sentiment isn't actually a modern, rah-rah feminist as it might seem. I forget who it was, but someone not long after they died (and were buried next to each other in Westminster Abbey, BTW) said that if only Early Modern England had same-sex marriage, all their problems could have been solved. Again, heterosexual patriarchy is a curse and a scourge. Mary was Queen of France for a while and grew up in the French court, so either she'd have had a straight-up French accent, or some bizarre French-spoken-with-a-Scottish-burr accent. Can you IMAGINE Saoirse trying that one out?!
