I'm obsessed - OBSESSED - with ranking/ deep diving on the Bond themes. The Sheena performance is unhinged, and For Your Eyes Only sounds like it was written in five minutes on a Casio keyboard. 100% agree that Nobody Does it Better is the best, but License to Kill - complete with Gladys Knight in a 007 tuxedo - is so underrated. Want to direct everyone to one of my all-time favourite clips, Shirley shading Tina Turner's delivery of Goldeneye. Dame Shirl claims Tina 'didn't have the range' and that Shirley was invited BY James Bond himself to the London premiere as if James Bond was a real person. Shirley seems very... 'refreshed'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESNkBGfHxrQ

I had this when I was in high school and loved it.

The recentish monologue joke that I think about most often is Steve Martin at the 2002/03 Oscars: “Roman Polanski is here… get him!”

We had McDonald’s vhs of back to the future and fivel goes west if I can recall

Here I am zipping up my Gen-X Pendleton “Lebowski” cardigan moments before I started listening to this episode. 😂

Chris is so right about Clifford! Joe, you've gotta give it another chance. Grodin and Short are both hysterical. (They should cut the weird Ben Savage bookends tho).

Braden Poapst

My favorite Costner bit where he talks too freaking long is when he presents Best Director to Jane Campion and he’s going on and on and on about something and when Jane gets onstage she just says “Thanks Kevin, that was very dramatic.”

Benji Black

Crazy the performance of "Under the Sea" is in this. They had no idea when this was produced, Disney would be going on a decade long run of Best Song nominations/wins.

CINEMANIA IS MY ORIGIN STORY TOO!!!

Chiming in to say that my well-worn VHSes of THE ADDAMS FAMILY and WAYNE'S WORLD as a kid were indeed from McDonald's. I know the pre-roll on those well and will occasionally wallow in nostalgic crapulence by rewatching them on YouTube.

I owned this VHS (as a gay boy born in 1979 obviously) and the thing that always stuck out to me was the "Thank You Very Much" number because...truly wild. So of course I was excited to hear it get mentioned (and in fact thank you for doing this entire episode because...well I'm gay). But I have to offer a correction. That was not a song written for the ceremony. That was a performance of a Best Original Song NOMINEE from the film "Scrooge."

John Ananias

I do love the Dana Carvey shoutouts - especially being that they're for two of my favorite Carvey impressions.

Tripp Burton

“Thank You Very Much” is actually an Oscar nominated song from SCROOGE!

Everything about this excursion was amazing. This Karl Malden-driven Time Machine was like a warm cardigan. Thank you!

CLIFFORD IS A MASTERPIECE! Thank you, Chris!

The Billy Crystal bit that was cut from the YouTube video was only 40 seconds from his opening monologue from the 1990 telecast (for the films of 1989). Nothing offensive - just his intro to the “it’s a wonderful night for Oscar” song. The entire ceremony from that year is on YouTube, but get this - the opening monologue is cut from that video as well. Apparently the Oscars have copyrights to the opening bits but are available on their official YouTube channel. Here’s a link to the monologue, and what was cut starts about the 6:10 mark: https://youtu.be/daKq-LQobok?si=eH8LuDUA_qepvPww Very special thanks to Joe and Chris for choosing this as the excursion. I have owned the VHS for years - bought it from the mall store I worked at in college (shout out to Suncoast Motion Picture Company) - and honestly thought I was only one of a handful of people who had even heard of it. I am thrilled to find out that I was not alone in my awareness of and love for this video, which is definitely part of my Oscar origin story.

Joe I don’t remember which episode you raved about diet 7up but I just want to thank you for the rec. I was always a big Sprite guy but couldn’t get behind diet Sprite. I tried the 7up based on your recommendation and I love it. Thanks so much!

Who else paused the audio to do a Google search of "Jon Voight red carpet"? SO MANY SCARVES. Also, I would 100% watch I Love the Oscars in the leadup to the ceremony. It would be such a fun way to revisit memorable moments and build excitement.

I'm losing my mind right now at your suggestion of 'I Love the Oscars'! So a friend and I have been watching every best picture nominee and we watch the films on our own and then discuss and we talk about the films and the award show for that year and major events in history to like timeset. And now that we're up to the 70s my process has been: watch the 5 best picture nominees, read Inside Oscar for that year, watch whatever movie you covered for the 70s mini series, re-listen to the 70s mini series podcast for that year, watch 'I love the 70s' and 'I love the 70s Volume 2' for that year. Truly that format works so well and should still be a thing for topics in today's culture

I just have to say this was a great show. The streaker moment was a real shocker to me when I was 10 and within the next few days I streaked through the whole neighborhood. This landed me in a week long detention and ended my streaking carrier but never left my heart. Aldo I’m one of your older members at 64, female cis gender. Keep it up and give me great entertainment for my retirement. ❤️

Joe & Chris mentioned the song 'Love' from the Disney Robin Hood - FYI this song is playing on a phonograph the background in a scene from 'Fantastic Mr. Fox'. It's just after cousin Kristofferson gets there, a little wave from one cinematic fox to another.

Brit

The way Joe said “Kermit is a Muppet” made me burst out laughing in my very quiet office. 🤣🤣

Thank you guys for this episode! I feel this was a perfect excursion. I watched this on VHS after renting it at a video rental in my native Mexico. Me and my brother devoured this and started memorising all the Oscar trivia. Loved rewatching this on YouTube! Thanks for the commentary and did brining back great memories.
