They should have sent a poet, but instead they sent two gay guys. For your August Exception, we're talking the Jodie Foster starring, alien-lite science fiction epic Contact! Topics include how this film fares as Robert Zemeckis' Oscar follow-up, Matthew McConaughey miscast as God's lobbyist, the film's odd rhythms and trend-bucking vision of aliens, and much more!

I will always misremember this as being a Christmastime release rather than a July release; it just 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 a December kind of "spectacle." (I will not call this a "Mandela Effect" situation, because it's a me thing and a "me thing" is NOT a "Mandela Effect" situation.) In reality, this must have been in my first EW summer movie preview issue, as '97 was my first year subscribing. (As a certain character says in a film that WAS a Dec. '97 release, "I read my 'Entertainment Weekly.'") More importantly, I suppose, pretty great movie, this!

My last favorite foster role was true detective season 4?

Man oh man, the BATMAN & ROBIN/THE DARK KNIGHT RISES conversation... ...I have so many thoughts. The idea that BATMAN & ROBIN - the cacophonous mess that is BATMAN & ROBIN - is more of "a functional movie" is wiiiiiild to me. Those who have fun with it (fun that I have with most of BATMAN FOREVER, by the way, even though that is messy itself), great, you should, but it is not the solid example of pure camp that it's praised for when it is praised; it is trying to do too much and contains too much and tries for the straightforward heartstring-tugging too and gaaaaahhhhh. No offense to the fans, I just got invested in the detour on it and it's a sore spot, that picture.

Y'all HAVE to cover The Birdcage before your 90s kick ends.

Martin Schneider

The trouble is, CONTACT the book did not win the Pulitzer Prize, Sagan won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for "The Dragons of Eden." Therefore he is "the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Contact."

Stephanie Radcliffe

I have never seen an Avatar and everything I learn by osmosis makes me want to know so much less. But Joe absolutely played himself on that draft, Chris and Katy were never going to draft Avatar when there were so many other good movies to draft!

Braden Poapst

Need Cole Escola to make a new “Serial Killer Documentary” video about the potentially demonic Labubu Chris locked eyes with.

I was indeed taken to see this at age 11 and was bored to tears. Like it as an adult. The very first movie I truly hated in the theater was Batman and Robin. The only good parts are Uma and the Ice puns

I would say it's basically only Nolan who gets to make movies in this sort of tone and scale. Especially relevant given McConaughey

Nick Tyczkowski

I was surprised that Joe didn’t mention Arrival as an expensive, smart Sci-Fi film made for adults. It’s probably the closest recent parallel.

Jason J

Boys, boys, there's no need to fight. BOTH of those Batman movies suck.

Brad Ellmoos

One of my all time favourite film scores is Alan Silvestri’s score for ‘Death Becomes Her’.

You know, taking in these replies (including one of my own), I've reached the conclusion that, if you ever cover a Batman movie as an Exception, we Garys have a responsibility to turn THAT comment section into a discussion on CONTACT.

The Deadly Bulb

One of my spicier takes is that Batman Begins is actually the lame duck of the Nolan trilogy. I think Nolan improves significantly as a director between BB in 2005 and DKR in 2012. In the in-between years he makes The Prestige, The Dark Knight, AND Inception! He’s on a completely different level at that point. The Gotham of BB feels neutered and dingy, and I think in general the movie reeks of studio notes. Dark Knight Rises on the other hand feels like a natural extension of The Dark Knight, with a setting and characters that Nolan has developed to fit his specific vision. Now obviously DKR isn’t on the same level as The Dark Knight, but to compare it to a pure meme movie like Batman and Robin is ludicrous imo.

I had to rewind the Labubu discussion and listen to it again for the serotonin…despite Joe blood-libeling Stephen Miller 🤣

Chauncey Telese

Good episode but it seemed like they were at times at their most curmudgeonly.

Emily

I was not a fan of Dark Knight Rises or Batman & Robin. But I hated DKR way more. I’ve only been able to watch it once. Also - I was one of those 16 year old nerds who saw Contact on the theater!!

Tad Hopp

Yeah, I’m gonna be the naysayer here and just say that I actually think the dark knight is the worst batman movie. It’s boring and way too long. And heath ledger makes a terrible joker. Dark knight rises is surprisingly great. I ended up seeing it twice in the theatres in the span of a week! I saw contact in the theatre when I was around 12 or 13. Way too young for that type of movie but my mom and I liked Jodie foster. I haven’t seen it since and I suspect I would like it a lot more now even though I’m not a big sci fi person. I do think it deserved more nominations though and I also think we need to see Jodie foster in more movies. She’s so talented.

Brandon Skidmore

As someone who lives on the Gulf Coast, I just want to show some love for Pensacola after Joe gave it some unnecessary hate: Pensacola is a lovely town with a beautiful beach. Although, it looks nothing like the Lost island that is depicted in Contact.

Michael

Cast Bill Pullman in the Mconoughey role

Brent Holcomb

I saw this on opening weekend when I was twelve and immediately decided it was my favorite movie. My family was super Christian and my dad was very concerned by my reaction to Contact. I couldn't wrap my head around why I loved it so much back then. I thought it was just my Jodie Foster obsession. Flash forward to my Richard Dawkins/Christopher Hitchens college epiphanies and it made more sense why Contact was so scandalously appealing to me. Not many PG-rated movies presenting a strong female atheist lead heroine back then, or now for that matter. Still a banger and so is the book, which is worth reading for the wildly different ending (and to experience Palmer as the antagonist he was originally written to be). Yay Contact! I'm ok to go!!
