It's August Excursion time and we are returning to the hallowed well of Entertainment Weekly Fall Movie Previews! In this look back at the 2000 edition, we discuss the hype and financial disappointment around Almost Famous, the delayed release for Moulin Rouge!, the omnipresence of Survivor at the time of print, Jim Carrey learning torture survival techniques, and Now! That's What I Call Music 4.

I worked as a graduate intern in the student judicial office at Northwestern in the late 00s, and the overwhelming majority of my cases were illegal digital downloads. The most awkward meetings weren’t just the porn downloads—though those were always cringe, especially when I had to read the title out loud—but when they had downloaded something truly embarrassing. Like Son-in-Law. That shamed us all.

The three good Eminem songs are my name is, lose yourself and the one song that samples Aerosmith

Now watch Ginger Minj win a season of Survivor to really send Chris to the conspiracy board

(a) Love it when the show runs on a theme across the main feed and the Patreon, and I enjoyed this 2000 moment. (2) As a Floridian-not-by-choice who was here in 2000 (albeit being well before voting age then), I rarely get to ENJOY thinking back to the year 2000, so 'twas a nice break.

Poor Al Gore. Bush knew he was more likable than Gore and that America doesn’t always vote for the super honor student. American elections don’t go to the highest IQ! Gore really lost his mojo when a masseuse accused him of sexual assault and Tipper divorced him around the same time. The assault charge wasn’t proved. But Tipper’s move seemed to give it credence. Gore became a toxic loser and yes POOF seemed to vanish.

I remember why the St Louis Rams were OUT in August 2000: their QB was seriously injured in a preseason game and no one thought this talented roster had a chance to win with a backup QB. But in comes an unknown Kurt Warner and five months later, Super Bowl champs.

Carson Shofner

Recently watched 102 Dalmatians. Not as good as the first, but Glenn Close got baked into a giant cake.. what’s not to love?

I love these episodes since I read EW religiously during this time period, this issue included. FWIW, my friend and I watched Shadow of the Vampire as a double feature with Nosferatu (2024) last winter and it holds up.

Favorite meta moment in the Ally/Practice crossover phenom - Lara: Maybe you could eat a cookie. Calista: Maybe we could share it.

I AM THE ONE WHO HAD THE CHER STRONG ENOUGH RINGTONE

Watched every episode of Witchblade on TNT. Avid watcher. Barely remember anything about it except the lead was named Yancy Butler.

anth.

which tier gives me an Excursion that’s just Chris and Joe reading different Now That’s What I Call Music tracklists to each other

Rob Watson

“This was a good month to be gay and have proximity to an arthouse movie theater…” Having an extreme nostalgic sense memory of seeing Broken Hearts Club, Urbania, *and* Psycho Beach Party at the Landmark Kendall Square in Boston during my very first month or so of college.

102 Dalmatians slays the runway but bombs the challenge

The Reading Bee

The new ding for a movies covered on a previous episode is helpful, but it scared the hell out of me the first time.

Liesl

I saw Remember the Titans when it first came to theaters as a senior in college. Ryan Gosling definitely does not die in it; his part is very small and kind of goofy. Also, "Faded" by soulDecision is SUCH a bop.

Taylor Cole

During the quills discussion, did anyone else’s brain process “Geoffrey writes poetry in poop” as “Jeffrey Wright’s poetry in poop”?

Also, the NOW compilations are an EXCELLENT resource for someone (like me) who spent years in charge of music for summer camp dance parties, because they’re all the radio friendly clean versions. I had the US versions of the first 64 volumes in my iTunes library, and gave them their own genre to help separate them from everything else.

Hanson’s 2nd album is a banger. EW (specifically Michael Slezak) did do right by Melinda Doolittle by having her on their fun weekly Idol breakdown videos. Excess Baggage - the only movie I’ve ever walked out of.

Tales From a Costume Designer

[Stefon impression] This episode has EVERYTHING: a return to the best magazine of all time (RIP EW💀⚰️🪦🕊️), #JusticeForTheCell - Eiko Ishioka is the 🐐, coverage on my all-time favorite film Moulin Rouge❗️, revisiting the joy of the Now! That's What I Call Music compilations, and a fun surprise mention of two movies I costume designed. Now, I know the tone of Freaky and Happy Death Day 2U are absolutely not for everyone -- I just get a little ding in my head much like the "dings" in this episode when I hear the titles. Love you guys and thanks for all that you do x

Chauncey Telese

You guys joke but id absolutely guest on a men of honor episode. I am a dad and actively rented this movie at 11 because maybe ive always been a dad.

Emily

I remember when Witchblade came out. I think I watched a few episodes here and there. But I also remember seeing ads & commercials everywhere!

German Munoz

Ok, need to rant about Traffic. Benicio Del Toros speaks Spanish like a VERY non-native speaker. It drove me crazy as a Méxican. Now I know how the Emilia Pérez haters felt (though none of those characters were Mexican in the film). And thank you for calling out the dirty brown colour tone used to show Mexico, ugh. Loved this episode!

Sienzo

So glad you guys are Sean penn rememberers 🧐 Sure, he is a good actor but why has everyone forgotten about our girl Madge
