I sometimes think that people assume too much when talking about "the new Academy" or whatever, assume more has changed in recent years than it probably has...but changes ARE happening, what is/isn't an "Oscars movie" is less and less clear and more diverse (a GREAT thing, that!), and my point is that the Best Actor category for 2013 is one of those categories I imagine would be VERY different if the branch voted now/these days.

The year this came out I was in grad school and one of my professors got a stack of FYC scripts that were bound like souvenir paperback books. This was one of them and I leafed through it in disbelief because I had no interest in this movie. As a voter he also had no interest and asked us if any of us wanted the scripts.

i've always hated the George Clooney/Amal Alamuddin joke at the Globes. Maybe I'm being pedantic, but it's an awards show for Hollywood. Why would an international attorney get an award there? Why wouldn't an influential and acclaiimed actor/director/producer receive an award? I get the premise and it's an easy laugh/brownie point but I couldn't get past that. She was and is very well-regarded in her own field, but that night wasn't about her or her accomplishments.

Wow 4 minutes in just unlocked a buried memory of the time I went on a whale watching trip for extra credit in high school science. I got very seasick and saw maybe 1 🐋 through the bathroom window lol. But then later we had a big swarm of dolphins following us, so that was nice.
