Be a singer! Be a lover! Be... a patron!

We are kicking off our Exceptions episode with one of 2009's biggest misfires: Rob Marshall's adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Nine. Topics include: the film's 4 nominations, a ranking of its performances, gay bar showtunes nights, Fergie slinging sand, and Marshall as a one-trick-pony.

Hey, I just watched this movie the other day. Clearly I knew in my bones this was happening.

I love that you’re kicking off that RSS Feed Patreon-o

FINALLY HELLO

Tales From a Costume Designer

I had a memorable theater experience for this one: I remember seeing this at the Ziegfeld Theater (RIP) and I sat two rows behind Michael Kors and his slightly orange-tinted head was very distracting throughout the film. I think I remember that better than the actual movie!

Will Holston

I was working at a movie theater when this opened. Staff stayed after closing the night before it opened to watch it. We all got very drunk and danced in the aisles ... Until about halfway through when everyone became extremely bored and starting throwing things. We weren't loving the cinema Italiano.

Will Holston

I do know every word of Cinema Italiano by heart. It played over the credits so I've heard it in full an innumerable number of times while sweeping up popcorn.

Also yay for the Patreon! Took y'all long enough. 😂

I’ll never forget sitting my sister on Christmas Day watching this movie and being so let down with each successive musical number. My sister turned to me at the end and said, “I thought this was supposed to be good?!” I’ll admit as years and rewatches have happened I think I like it as a bad curio, but it’s enjoyably tacky. I think I actually like everyone’s non musical numbers best.

I was dragged for a year on the IMDb message boards for calling that this was gonna flop. I held it over them for YEARS afterwards 😂

LOVING the new game!

Ruan Felipe

Le cinema today is in a crisis!

Jesse

This was the first film I ever saw at the Castro Theatre after moving to San Francisco. As I recall it had a full one week engagement. Feeling the waves of flop energy reverberating through such a gigantic, grand--and mostly empty--space was TRULY an experience.

Philip

I remember feeling very excited in advance of this movie and then feeling absolutely nothing when I left it. I'm going to re-watch and see if it still has the same impact (or lack of) now...

Eric Nordin

Woohoo! Patreon! So excited for the ep ideas you’re cooking up. Also excited I can finally throw a little money your way. Congrats

Melissa

Yay Patreon content! Just signed up, so haven't listened to this ep yet but I remember watching Nine for the first time and going What The Actual Fuck when Fergie popped up

I need to track down the photo of me + friends at The Grand theater in Tacoma, WA in front of the Nine poster seeing it near (if not on) opening night. We are resplendent in period-appropriate leggings, tunics and Tory Burch flats.

TheRealestXtina

The way I saw this movie opening weekend when I was in high school…powerful. Thank you for this.

Matthew Kern

I saw this with my beloved now departed grandmother so I have a soft spot for it.
