Happy New Year, Garys! This month's exception is one from the top of our list, the once sight-unseen Best Picture frontrunner for 2007: Charlie Wilson's War. Topics include the long period between nominations for Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, Aaron Sorkin's place in a stacked Adapted Screenplay Race, and our favorite Mike Nichols films.

Heart is breaking hearing the statment "Tom Wilkinson should have an oscar by now" just days after he passed.

Michael

Ditto . Hearing about Wilkinson 😢

David Kirk

Hope THOB can cover one of Tom Wilkinsons many underrated performances (which is basically all of them). Maybe Belle.

Frank Ritz

Def sad bout Wilkinson; was nice to hear y’all wax organically. But also, sorry Joe, Chris is right bout Leave the World Behind. It’s fine at best, but often seems like an A.I. fake movie

MJ

I’ll split the difference on Leave the World Behind and say I found it to be a very watchable mess. Dug Julia’s vulgar misanthropy and Mahershala in spooky/sexy mode. Hated My’hala’s non-performance (and I say this as an Industry fan). Thought the actor playing the son was *very* hot. Also, I love how Blank Check and now THOB have given Julia Roberts and Holly Hunter to Texas. Let us Georgians have this! (Joanne Woodward’s our girl too if we’re talking Best Actress winners).

Honestly, No side in the Soviet Afghanistan war was good

emoss054

Satisfaction was my back pocket Julia film. Iconic Justine Bateman cinema.

Abdullah Ali

Chris is wrong, Joe is right. Leave The World Behind was fun!

Why are you so pressed to make your Patron episodes so short? You realize we pay for these right? They should be your longest episodes…

Elliott Sainsbury

Hard agree with Joe on gays stanning the wrong Movies With Women/wrong movies in general. My Threads feed is full of Saltburn content while May December is RIGHT THERE!

Matthew Holsapple

Me this episode is the first time in history anyone has yelled the movie "I Love Trouble" at a podcast.

Trevor R.

leave the world behind is a disaster of a book and a worse movie.

Rob Watson

Chris is absolutely correct about LTWB.

Cyrano

New Patron and first Patreon episode, after having CWW in my Letterboxd watchlist for a very long time. Really love the different approach to Exceptions (not qualitatively, just the fact that it is different).

So…I sought out Mirror Mirror in the theatre when it released bc Tarsem Singh with costumes by the late great Eiko Ishioka and…it is real uneven. I think Julia is actually pretty good as the evil step mom and Lily Collins is OK, but for a kids movie the humor is really off color (Nathan Lane is Too Much and tries to tell a joke about a cockroach that tries to take advantage of him after he’s been turned into a bug - to which the group of children to my right had to ask their parents what that meant - and now that Armie Hammer is 😬 it has not aged well, plus they did some weird CGI of normal height actors onto little people)

Frank McCormick

I'm with Chris: Leave the World Behind bad.

Chauncey Telese

I'm pretty sure you guys forgot The Mexican

Oliver Sava

HERE stan checking in! It’s actually a very innovative graphic novel that looks at its living room space across thousands of years, from prehistory ooze to the far future. The novel has no actual narrative though, it’s far more abstract. It’s more about the presentation of space and time in its specific medium (comics), which could be a cool idea for a movie. I don’t know about this creative team for that tho…

2007 really was such a crazily stacked year for various awards contenders. remember grace is gone and starting out in the evening?

College library ILL staffers rise! I worked in my university’s ILL office too, Joe. Still one of my favorite jobs that ultimately inspired me to go to library school. Also used the shit out of my CLAMS (Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing) card to rent many movies in middle and high school. Libraries rule!

Eric Nordin

Leave the World behind is a solid movie!
