re: DIANE LANE credited in TULLY, she is in archival footage from her role in 1982’s LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS which the characters in the movie watch

Happy Christmas Eve to all Garys. Today everything remains possible. Treasure this time. Tomorrow you’ll want to return some gifts you’ve been given, but alas won’t have a gift receipt. Tomorrow you’re going to have to put aside all the dreams of gifts you haven’t been given. But you’ll likely also find you underestimated Santa and be given a nice surprise too.

If yer gonna invite diane lads to your event, for gods sake don’t forget Lara dern

Pella's Window

I've been waiting for this episode for years. Ever since the 2003 miniseries. I think in a lot of ways it epitomizes everything I love about this show and the state of Actress-sexual discourse in Awards blogging of 20 years ago. When you talked about the "Diane Lane WILL not Happen" movement. I can still visualize that janky HTML designed Geocities looking post on Kris Tapley's first website 22 years ago. What an era. And now he works for Netflix. Under the Tuscan Sun is such a lovely zeitgeist. That's why Its so frustrating to me that I HATE this movie. I absolutely HATE this movie. The comparisons to Greys Anatomy are perfect because my thought at the time was "all the narcissism of Grey's Anatomy without any of the needle drops." (Greys didn't invent it. Remember that Something's Gotta Give used "Butterfly" by Crazytown this very same year. I find Diane Lane's character to be insufferable. The cute italian boys did nothing for me. It just was the oppositve of everything I wanted in a movie in 2003. I was hoping hearing you all talk about it would make me want to revisit it, but nope. It's just the opposite. I'm glad you love this movie, and I've come around on Diane Lane in recent years because of the Secretariat episode (AKA Chris is afraid of horses).

Great mention of Lindsay Duncan, esp. in Roger Michell’s Le Week-End which ALSO has a black and white version (available on the blu-ray) in keeping with the sense of a French New Wave homage throughout the film (or least walking over that hallowed ground). The dance trio at the end is a lift from Godard’s Bande a Part. Also, definitely watch Streets of Fire - not really a bro movie at all - but audacious and wildly entertaining. The Diane Lane Inn & Suites should include a Streets of Fire room where you get hand-cuffed to a bed by a young Willem DaFoe and rescued by prime Michael Pare. Yes, watch this film and prepare to be obsessed. (Streets of Fire is the only blu-ray I’ve purchased probably in the last 7 - 8 years.)

Harold, they’re bella bambinas!

I think Diane Lane gives this movie the emotional heft it needs to keep it out of Eat Pray Love territory. I rather like this film, all problematic/things that are outdated aside! I still quote "Creepy Italian Trees. It's like they know" anytime I see one of those Italian cypresses. RE: Grey's Anatomy. Still a hanger-on. This is the one show where I have never, ever missed one episode since it premiered in 2005 and now this feels like a mission I must complete until it goes off the air. When Grey's was good, it was good! This last season felt the most nostalgic, classic Grey's Anatomy to me than what we've had on offer over the last, I don't know, 5 years?? THAT SAID: I completely forgot that it hasn't come back yet since the strike, and I kind of don't care... but I will watch if it shows up in my DVR. I just cannot!!

hijacking the discussion to ask on the status if any of a THOB discord!! I always watch the Oscars alone (admittedly because I'm Extremely Annoying during it) but would love to chat with fellow Garys during it!

Culture Club's Mr. Vain

What's happened to Taco Bell is a travesty but there remains one actual value item in american fast food: The Wendy's 5-dollar biggie bag, comprised of junior bacon cheeseburger, 4 piece nuggets+sauce, med drink, med fries.

All this Shonda Rhimes talk reminded me of when she was going to make a Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown TV show. Thank goodness that never came to be.

“Ciao, Mama!” was my text alert noise for a solid year.

Stephanie Radcliffe

My Life Without Me is a sweet little movie. Debbie Harry plays Sarah Polley's mom, and Polley romances the eternal hotties Scott Speedman and Mark Ruffalo (before sadly dying).

Listened to this on a train from Milan to Trieste, so really made me want to watch the film, which I haven't seen despite having spent a lot of time under the Tuscan sun.

Christina Binder

Just spotted "under the Tuscan sun" on Hulu. Was it streaming there on Monday? Is there some Disney exec listening to THOB?

Gosia

Great episode and enjoyed hearing the Oscar predictions you both made as part of the Vulture MFL . Can’t wait for the “class of” episode as your annual discussion makes the sting a bit easier about some of the great films that missed out on nominations.

sleightsofheart

I've just gotten to the Oscar predictions bit and I am raging about All of Us Strangers all over again

Really hoping that teased excursion about the 2023 extra superlatives will include a Palm Dog category

Kara Hogan

“Surely, some of the fish in Finding Nemo are gay” is an all-timer Chris Feil quote

A pack of cigs is $10 these days. Same as a gingerbread latte? Phew! I don’t feel so bad now. :P THOB Patreon is a steal no matter how you cut it. Best money I spend all month.

Jamesconrad

For some reason I had totally missed this movie. I loved it. Thanks for getting it on my stream. (And yes if cigarettes were $5 we’d all still be smoking in our water fountain dances)

Liam Haber

Days late because I’ve been listening to the Barbra audiobook (thanks for the rec!) But you def have to check out A Little Romance. Such a cute little film. Very worth watching for a light romcom with a good budget

Caitlin McDonald

Could y’all enter timestamps in the show notes for when vulture movie league talk stops/starts? I relisten to old eps a lot and it’d be nice to know where to skip the out-of-date stuff. Love the pod!!!!!
