Are the Garys as excited for the prospect of "Paul Giamatti, frontrunner" as we are? For February's exception, we're looking back at Giamatti's work in the Canadian adaptation Barney's Version, a tale of an insufferable cad that made Giamatti a nomination dark horse after a surprise Globe win, but ended up with a Best Makeup nomination instead. Topics include the prevalence of old-age makeup nominees, performances besides Sideways that we would nominate Giamatti for, and what nominee we think kept Giamatti from a Sideways nomination.

The book has an ingenious framing device that the movie lacks, and sorely needed. It's written as if it's Barney's memoir, published posthumously, with footnotes and corrections from Barney's son. So it calls out the character's bullshit self-aggrandizing much more than the movie does.

I always cite this years globes when I complain about them not knowing what to do with Musical/Comedy performances

Not me (a birder) screaming “The Big Year” for three minutes straight while listening to the end of the episode in my car 😂 Roz is great as Owen Wilson’s put upon wife in that movie, where his character chooses birds over having sex with her multiple times.

For what it’s worth, the Makeup (& Hairstyling) shortlisted films that didn’t get nominated are listed on the Wikipedia page for that category going all the way back to 1999! The four that missed in 2010 were Alice in Wonderland, The Fighter, Jonah Hex, and True Grit (justice for Black Swan 🖤)

Montreal-based Gary here! happy to answer any and all Quebec-specific questions (truly an insane place sometimes). FWIW, Richler is *the* Canadian Philip Roth

It's continually "funny" - which is to say, irksome - to me that horror is rarely present in the Makeup/Hairstyling category, and a whole Cause for a lot of Oscars people, when that category, to some degree, exists 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑟 - if I'm recalling correctly, it becomes a regular the year of 𝐴𝑛 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑊𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑤𝑜𝑙𝑓 𝑖𝑛 𝐿𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑛. Oh how we forget our roots!

Corey Baesler

after one of you wins the filmography game, will you do a bonus episode on the criterion film like screen drafts does?

John Ananias

I just need to say: I would have nominated "Pimps Don't Cry" from 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑂𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝐺𝑢𝑦𝑠 for Best Original Song - and I feel all the more strongly about that being reminded that there were, for whatever reason, four nominees this year instead of five. Yes, in this reality, Eva Mendes performs it on the show.

“WHORE” written in red lipstick on the mirror should have counted towards a best makeup nomination for Black Swan

Rebecca

Can we please get the upcoming schedule posted again . Haven't seen one since November. I really like to try and watch the movie before listening.

It makes me so sad when THOB doesn't like a film that I love, and I LOVE Barney's Version

Hayley

On the topic of Paul Giamatti, I always think of his one scene in My Best Friend’s wedding. It’s so lovely! Love him, love you, THOB!

Re: the discussion on awarding makeup. Made me realize that it’s the opposite of costumes. Makeup tends to award “realistic” old age. Costumes tend to award “realistic” period. Neither tends to award the “everyday”. Which I’m sure is just as hard for both. Interesting.
