Re: asparagus — roasting is the way to go! Oil ‘em up, single layer on a sheet pan, 375 for 15-20 mins, a squeeze of lemon…your resolution begins now 😂

It was great to hear so much conversation about Abbas K. He’s one of my favorite filmmakers and the podcast-industrial complex has woefully undercommitted resources to unpacking his oeuvre. More please and thank you. 💜

My Patreon selection! Yes, you clocked me, age 12, telling people my favorite film was “In the Mood for Love.” I could not have asked for a better discussion and hope it gets more people to watch such a rewarding movie. Walking away from this film without diving into the narrative shape and themes it’s exploring would be such a disservice and miss so much of its brilliance, and now we have a great discussion in this episode. Thanks guys, and proud to support you!

Joe, “Close-Up” is absolutely the next place to go re: Kiarostami. There’s a reason that’s the one that has placed highly on the last few sight and sound lists. The rest of this sentence will seem very uppity and dumb, but trust when I say you gotta watch it once cold, then go read a whole bunch about it, then watch it again to really feel its full impact. I’ve seen nearly all of his features and for my money, Close-Up is the one that really distills his whole identity down to a single film most elegantly. Mohsen Makmahlbaf’s “A Moment of Innocence” is a lovely companion to Close-Up, as is Jafar Panahi’s “The Mirror” in terms of 90s Iranian meta-cinema masterpieces. And if you’re burnt out on heady stuff, Children of Heaven (you mentioned on the ep as being Iran’s first International Feature nom) is just lovely and delightful. The kind of movie I’m gonna show to my nieces as soon as they can read subtitles comfortably. Last Kiarostami thing: the packaging for the criterion edition of his Koker trilogy of movies is my favorite physical media packaging I’ve ever seen. Was genuinely moved when I opened it for the first time.

I can't speak to this movie, but I can say that the chocolatey special k are good for exactly that reason of the little chunks for chewing. Also special k is great with half and half drizzled on top, rendering its so called diet properties neutralized.

I loved the name drop of Take Shelter. It is my favourite film of the 2010s. An absolute masterpiece to me. Really holding out for an episode on this!

I got the notification about this chat while listening to today’s episode. Is there anyway we can get the episodes without the Patreon pitch? I completely understand you guys have to sell the service. But you have already made the sale and hearing the details about an episode I have already heard is annoying. And just keeps me from what I want to hear which is you guys talking about the movie or the difficulty of cooking certain vegetables.

I got to hang out with Kiarostami as a kid. My dad co-directed a documentary about him called The Art of Living and spent time with him at Cannes '03 and in Ireland. He was so lovely to me. I have a photo with him somewhere

Please do do an ep on Breaking and Entering, I loved that movie very much

Listening to Joe tell Chris about The New Look, looking it up on IMDB, and hearing Chris say "I'll definitely be watching this, unless it's some Apple TV thing..." right as you see the enormous Apple TV+ logo right at the top of its poster.

Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano met doing an off-Broadway play in 2007, so a few years prior to Meek’s Cutoff! Hate that I knew this off of the top of my head but I love them both

This interpretation of the film I have seen 20+ times stopped me cold. What a perfect theory that unlocks even more to the film https://boxd.it/53ltp

Re: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - domestic reception: The one upside on the varying accents is that the actors were not dubbed over with proper Chinese mandarin, so we’re hearing their actual voices unlike the Zhang Yimou films mentioned like Hero which dubbed Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung speaking mandarin since they did not speak proper Chinese mandarin - the difference being that CTHD was a mostly Taiwan/HK film whereas Hero was a China/HK film, so Hero had to follow China rules on presenting proper Chinese mandarin.

I feel like I am on an island in that I didn’t love this movie. I found the characters and structure incredibly frustrating. I think I’m too literal minded to fully appreciate it. Or too stupid either way.

Belated non-movie note cuz I’m just catching up to this ep: Special K has a “Chocolatey” Delight, not “Chocolate.” I’m not just splitting hairs: The FDA defines “chocolate” as having at least 15% cacao nibs (ground into what’s called “chocolate liquor”). Anything with less cacao cannot legally be called “chocolate,” so brands will stick the “-y” on the word to get around the law, literally saying that it’s ‘like’ chocolate. Quaker and Starbucks have done it too, and it’s deliberately deceptive.
