there is a relatively seamless cut about 1/3 of the way through where you'll notice a lighting change! I had to record in two parts due to power outage/construction at my apartment building!

i love this movie like its the little things. like when they where working on their essay about their future. first it had Minato looking at Yori when it was first announced, then them secretly putting each others names in their essay. and lastly the teacher noticing it. i just love the little details of this movie.

okay so as a big fan of this movie thought i would share some little details and info abt it! firstly the ending of course. kore-eda says in multiple interviews that he intended the ending to be ambiguous but in his idea they had survived- and the idyllic scenes following were showing their freedom in a sense. many people have said that the gates being flown off the tracks and such suggests the sense of liberation they can get from the world only when they are with one another. another thing being ryuichi sakamoto, may he rest in peace, who composed the score for the movie famously said ‘our salvation lies with the natural joy that children feel in being alive’.

now!! i love when movies use colour and symbolism and this work does it really well. u will notice lots of very obvious symbols to rain and water as well as fire— the typhoon, the hostess bar fire, the cat cremation, yori ‘dying’ (as some believe) in the bathtub. these two things can be seen in both characters as well. both yori and minato have matching jumpers (yori’s being orange for fire and minato blue for water). they are both impulsive and unpredictable just like any old 10 year old and they clash in ways but both are able to calm and placate each others lives. their large and confusing feelings are just like the large unpredictable typhoon and it’s sweeping anger. them escaping the train cart can almost symbolise not a rebirth as like they say ‘we’re still the same’ but an acceptance of their identity, they survived the flurry of the typhoon and in so their own feelings and came out realising it didn’t matter about being reborn as someone else, all that mattered was that they lived in a way that makes them happy.

also there are many pointers to yori and his sexuality, when you see what seems to be a drag queen on tv being made fun of, which is used against him at school, the ‘future’ papers where they wrote both of their names in code (backwards like how yori writes a letter for minato near the start). how yori loves flowers and then later you see minato carrying a flower for yori to apologise to him. someone has also pointed out before that they use two different words for monster- bakemono the word used by yori’s dad and how minato described himself; which can be seen a monster that 'transforms', a 'changed being' which could be used to show their homosexuality as something that can be altered, something to be fixed. and then there is kaibutsu which is a more general translation for monster but can kind of be seen as something unnatural and unknown, that is used when minato and yori are together! the whole movie itself seems to be a commentary on how easily people are to point fingers and call eachother monsters for things they don’t really know themselves— kore-eda himself has said to have described all the characters in the film being imprisoned by invisible walls. minato’s mother trapped by society’s ideals of a single mother, hori by his need for companionship, and then the constant violence the adults place onto the kids. he then says ‘the adults have been left behind and the kids have come to their own self-realisation’ a sentiment seen at the end, where they relish in the lack of pressures and abuse they face and just enjoy being together whilst 'the world ends around them' which i think is beautiful so🙂‍↕️

Gosh this brought me back to the first time I watched where all the pieces started clicking and then eventually the feeling of dread set in, especially with the use of the horns. Then at the end...slowly realizing that the setting didn't match the weather we just saw... the lack of a gate... GAH. Masterful storytelling, and rewatching is fascinating when you know the outcome. What I love most are the subtle things. One small thing I realized from someone on twitter was that the show Minato and his mom watched from both his and her POV had a drag queen as a "funny" character that the mom imitated and later the bullies did too. From mom's POV we see Minato smiling at her, and from his we see him watching the show blankly. ugh my heart :( This is one movie I'll never get over!

AHH! I love this movie! I love the way it was filmed! Beautiful storytelling!! Every time I watch it I always notice something new! Just kids who are scared to be themselves 💔 Them secretly writing each others names on their paper and Minato saying he likes someone but he can’t tell anyone because they know he can’t be happy 😭😭 PLEASE I always feel bad for Mr. Hori. He seemed like a genuinely good teacher and like his job. Plus the kids seemed to really like him too and were saying how nice he is. Unfortunately due to misunderstandings and different perspectives he got the short end of the stick. Everyone in this town thinks he some evil child abuser now. And the mom I feel for her too. She was trying so hard to figure out what was going on with Minato and protect him. Plus how scared she must’ve been not knowing what was going on.
