Another creator, BananaCreamGames, recently decided to cut off "free players" coming from platforms like Itch.io and F95, choosing instead to communicate and share updates exclusively through Patreon. They effectively walled off their game, Moonripple Lake, from anyone who hasn't already supported them financially. Unfortunately, they’re also planning to launch the game on Steam next year with only this limited player base knowing about the game (about 5,000 players). From a business perspective, this seems like a poor decision. The surge in Patreon subscribers happened largely due to the strong word-of-mouth promotion the game received, it's widely regarded as one of the best NTS titles out there. Turning their back on the free players who were instrumental in spreading the word feels a bit like a betrayal. By restricting access now, they’re limiting the game’s exposure and reach, which will likely hurt its performance on Steam. Not because the game lacks quality (because oh god, that game is so good), but because hardly anyone outside the current Patreon supporters will even know it exists. Though, it seems BCG changed his mind about fully ditching off those players from itch.io/F95 and is thinking about a different strategy. I hope AbyssGames don’t make the same mistake.

I mean, I don't plan on not releasing stuff to free members. I've always done that and will continue to do so. But I also don't think this is the place for a rant like that.

Angello Belmont

Oh no, not a rant at all. I simply believe there's a lot of value in learning from others' experiences. And for what it’s worth, I really appreciate the way you handle things around here.

DEMON LORD

hello and hope you have a great day dear amazing dev when will the update go live i thought it was supposed to be yesterday?

AbyssGames

I think you're confusing me with some other game dev. My planned release date is next Friday.

DEMON LORD

oh now i understand sorry i got confused i though next friday you meant yesterday but all good and thank you for this amazing game can't wait for the next update

BCG

Angello, we haven't spoken before but I wonder why'd you not say anything to me, if you feel so strongly about it :P

Angello Belmont

Hi BCG, it’s a nice surprise to hear from you. You’re right, we haven’t spoken before. I also never shared this feedback because, to be honest, I didn’t think it would make a difference. I felt like one person’s opinion wouldn’t really change your mind, and I’m not someone who likes to ask for free stuff (which is how this feedback might come across). I don’t usually interact much with developers or their communities. The only exception has been here, with AbyssGames, because I feel a stronger emotional connection to this game than I do with others.
Normally, I just subscribe to your Patreon, download the game, and quietly wait for updates. Money is tight for me too. I only support four creators on Patreon, and you’re one of them. So, my issue with your recent decision isn’t that it affects me directly, after all I’ll always have access to the game through Patreon. What concerns me more is how I discovered your game in the first place: it was through one of those free players on Itch.io. He shared it in a Discord server, spoke very highly of it, and called you one of the best out there. He said your game was unique in the NTS genre, with features he hadn’t seen anywhere else. What stood out the most to him was that it was free, yet incredibly high quality. His exact words were: “It’s short but so good. The best part is it’s free. Go check it out on Itchio.” So really, the only reason I even know about your game is because of a random guy on Discord who believed in it so much that he wanted others to experience it too. That person, by the way, probably wouldn’t have been able to afford the game either—he’s also from Colombia, like me, and here, money doesn’t stretch too far (at $1.30 an hour, every dollar matters, so choosing to support someone financially each month isn’t an easy decision). That’s why your decision stings a bit. It feels like it closes the door on the very people who helped your game grow in the first place, the ones who shared it out of genuine love, without expecting anything in return. I just wanted to share that perspective now that you’ve asked me directly. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and no matter what direction you take the game in, I truly wish you the best.

Your post here actually changed my mind about it... and I even posted about it in my private discord yesterday. You're welcome to share your thoughts about my game with me, anytime. Let's stop going offtopic here though, just replied to you here because I couldn't find you on my discord :D
