Remember the Rus were coming to scandinavia to raid, Ivar must have joined them and ran into Hvisterk who was roaming around, or Hvisterk heard the commotion and came to it. Idk lol

Hvisterk feels like he has no purpose, unlike Bjorn and Ubbe who seem to have their ambitions and dreams in place. So Hvitserk killing Lagertha, would seem like his purpose, and that the Gods wanted it to happen, hence why it happened. So that's why he might be proud of it, or at least not guilty about it. Also she was known as the Greatest Shield-maiden of all time so for him to kill her is also a big thing in their world, like reputation wise

So just to clarify, Freydis is dead. They are using the same actress because to Ivar she is identical to Freydis but to everyone else she isn't, so kind of like how Hvitserk was tripping and seeing Ivar in random places and Lagertha as Ivar... Ivar himself has been seeing his dead wife, probably down to the guilt for killing her
