1978 was not a good year

Stuart Kenny

At least the BBC still had The Two Ronnies. In fact, they came close to having their own show together on London Weekend in 1970/71. But when Rupert Murdoch took charge, he sacked anyone who was in cahoots with David Frost, that included Barker and Corbett as they were under contract to Frost rather than London Weekend. But it was after Bill Cotton and then BBC1 controller Paul Fox saw them perform live at the BAFTA awards, they were signed up to the BBC on the quick fast. The rest is history.
