Yes, more tobacco. Deal with it.

This one stretched my computer more than I was expecting, mostly because of the ridiculously high-res images Dave Dye managed to source (davedye.com) which is useful for the old Ken Burns effect but resource-heavy. The render didn't match the intended framerate, which is why some of the extended zoomy bits are so bouncy and random. You get the point, though.

The Hard Sell, Episode 94: Benson & Hedges

Advertising: the rattling of a stick in a swill-bucket? Welcome to the show where the stick rattles back: The Hard Sell. Adverts from history, treated with the respect they deserve. This episode: Not Brand X takes a look at one of Britain's favourite carcinogens and the jaw-dropping lengths they went to to advertise, and how they went from an straightforward aesthetic of pure luxury to a sometimes downright oblique hidden object game. Pure gold. Find more on http://www.bobthefish.org.uk, follow us on http:/www,twitter.com/applemask or support us on http://www.patreon.com/applemask! And visit http://www.davedye.com as well!

Brilliant stuff. There's something about cigarette and beer advertising that always seems to have an extra veneer of interest and complexity about it in my view. I seem to recall the B&H print adverts used to often confuse my brain when I was young, but that's probably because I hadn't looked hard enough for the gold packet secreted somewhere in the setting. Silk Cut adverts were similarly confusing too. Also have to say I love the cinema ads featuring Eric Sykes, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers. Beautifully shot, and the choice of piano music to accompany them is perfect for the more humorous tone.
