No idea when in 1975 but whatever. Or where, actually, but that's mostly because I don't remember who it was actually used those square opticals. Nor do I know why there isn't one between the last two adverts.

Wednesday 3rd December 1975 at 8pm, probably fully networked (give or take CTV) as it was 8th place in JICTARs ratings for the week with 7.65m homes watching (roughly 17m individual viewers at the accepted exchange rate of 2.2 people per home). Preceded by Coronation Street and followed by News At Ten.

I suppose it's at least possible it aired more than once in 1975? Certainly the 3rd of December airing was the only one that made the Jictar Top 20, and TV Times for that week does confirm that date, but doesn't say it was the UK TV premiere or anything.

The square opticals were LWT, I think. It would make sense with this recording being from that region, seeing as only London and the South would have had people who could afford their own VCR and the accompanying blank tapes in 1975. A number of other early non-schools ITV recordings from around this era seem to usually originate from Southern. Thames, from what I can gather, appear to have been the first to abandon opticals altogether, but don't quote me on that - they apparently definitely used them at one point prior to the mid-70s, but I've not seen any video evidence of them crop up.

Just searched on the British Newspaper Archive and discovered there was another showing of Our Man Flint on the ITV network on Saturday 8th July 1978, so could this in fact be from that broadcast? i've found the Cilla advert has been uploaded in isolation, taken from this very ad break, and that uploader certainly thinks it's 1978 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAoyeb2dXPs

The 1975 Itv broadcast of Our Man Flint was on a Wednesday night though, but having said that there was another airing on Saturday 8th July 1978, which this recording could actually be from if it's LWT. This link also shows some footage of LWT using those squares, but I can't rule out other ITV companies also using them too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgz5XdhYO1A

I have a few observations to make. (Great video, by the way.) Firstly, as someone who these days has to sell paint in a DIY store to make a living, masonary paint has a second box to tick in that it should have a matt finish. If it had a gloss finish, light would bounce off it all the more... which, come to think of it, would be an advantage for a lighthouse. Secondly, note how Cilla can't make her mind up about whether to be posh or not. She says (excuse the phonetics) 'glass and a harf' rather than 'glars and a harf' or 'glass and a haff'. Thirdly, I wish adverts would go back to the simplicity of the mid-70's. Simple, straight-forward and genuinely artistic, in many cases. Nothing I can do about it, sadly.

Oh dear, will Matthew have to reshoot a third of the video in one week at breakneck speed but seamlessly editing it in so no-one will notice the difference like what Ridley Scott did on All The Money In The World? ;) Only no sex offender actors were involved here. :P
