Stuart Kenny asked for something like this a year ago. It's 50 years old today, but this isn't a history of the show, just of the show's broadcast in the UK, and particularly why it was never brought to you by the letters BBC.

How to Get to Sesame Street

The legendary Muppet-saturated preschoolers edutainment programme is fifty years old. But, although it feels like a regular fixture in Britain as much as anywhere else, it was only shown in the UK for less than half of that time, altogether, and in a very piecemeal fashion - and not at all for nearly twenty years.

Excellent stuff, Matthew. I remember watching Sesame Street as a kid and being confused as to when the programmes had been recorded. Sometimes the actors were wearing flares and roll-necks when it was now the 80s. All very odd... I was never sure whether I was watching a complete episode from many years ago or a new episode with old bits dropped into it. Maybe it just didn't matter. It was fun to watch either way.
