The Hard Sell #118: Have a Break - Ireland

Yes.

Thank you very much Matthew for that. I just have a few points to make out. Firstly, Quinnsworths isn’t a department store, its a supermarket chain. It was later purchased by Tesco from Associated British Foods, which later renamed itself to Tesco Ireland. Secondly yes like the UK with our ales becoming unfashionable, by the late ’80s and early ‘90s in which Guinness was seen as a drink that your Dad or Grandad drunk. Young men at that time were moving to continental lagers like Guinness’ own Harp or Heineken, who owned the Murphy’s brewery down in Cork. Thirdly, as you said with Tixol dewormer, one I noticed with a lot of Irish advertising is the number of products for the agricultural industry, which as someone coming from a rural part of England namely East Anglia. The only other place I notice for TV ads for such goods is New Zealand, which like Ireland has a large farming industry. One of the good thing about watching “have a break” in other places, learning the similarities and differences between each other. Hoped you enjoyed doing this.

Your first comment on Black Tower reminded me of the HeadOn ads from about fourteen years ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HeadOn ...also the brief shot of the bloke in the Black Tower ad looks a bit like Leslie Phillips! I wonder if it was, and this was originally a British ad that's been cut down?

A lot of ads in Ireland are British. Some rejigged or re-tailored to the Irish market as making ads expensive, especially since Ireland is a small market. Nowadays, it is pretty common for the same ads to be shown all over Europe with a slight be of nativization eg. dubbing or certain scenes added or dropped for cultural reasons.

Some of those still ads are the most interesting. I saw one a while ago I remember from when I was a kid for cash registers 😁 but yeah like Philippe Branco said the vast majority of our ads were British along with our tv. We also had BBC and UTV in Dublin since the 60s or 70s I think, although according to my Da there was HTV when he was growing up. Coronation Street was shown at the same time on RTE and now Eastenders since Coronation Street moved to TV3 years ago (tv3 or Virgin media as it’s now called is owned by Granada) In so many ways Irish tv is just another regional station of the uk in tv terms anyway. And as for the Guinness advertising well it usually is a celebration of Irishness here, even the dancing man ad was kind of symbolic for us for where we were at the time and how we thought of ourselves. We also had the artsy ads as the years went on but there were also shorter ads that incorporated the GAA or the Irish Rugby team. Thanks for doing this Matthew.

Also i think those Irish voices doing the voice overs to make the international ads more Irish I think they’re still doing the voice overs? It seems to have been the same voices all my life?
