I got an early birthday present today from PicsRights Inc. of Toronto, demanding action on a picture of David Cameron I used on the cover of 2SUNS issue 31 and is copyrighted to Reuters. They demand that I take it off the Internet and pay them $350.

It's basically money with menaces, only (as far as I can tell) entirely legal and above board. Reuters really do employ them for this sort of thing. They're professional bullies. I haven't responded yet (except to take down 2SUNSmagazine.com, sadly) because like all bullies as soon as you let them know you're shook, they've got you and they'll never leave you.  Their whole business model is to scare people into paying up. The clever bit is that the menaces are backed up by law.

I'm looking into fair dealing law but it doesn't look good, and hiring a lawyer to go over it will cost more than the fine. I may have no choice but to give them what amounts to around £275 - about a month's earnings from this website at present - whereupon they'll probably put me in a spreadsheet marked "it worked" for future pestering.

I am not well-equipped for a game of chicken.

So anyway I'm still thinking through my strategy, including possibly starting a sad little GoFundMe or something to raise a few quid for the fine if it proves unavoidable, if it might.

Well, this is absolutely bloody awful. I'll definitely donate something if you set up a GoFundMe.

Well, that's not right. This whole thing smacks of the Octav1us Kitten Horacegate thing from last October. If they'd given you the option to remove the photograph, fair enough, but they want money? Greedy cunts!! I'd make their demands public and shame them into making a U-turn

I'll chip in a few quid if it's unavoidable
