That thing about schools TV presentation. It's not actually quite finished - specifically there's no credits. I'll put them on drekly. Right now it's too hot and the cat WILL NOT GET OUT OF THE WAY and if I try to persuade her she bites half my flesh off.

Before I view it, I’m going to assume that even the commercial networks that may have created such programming didn’t dare to put in advertising breaks for the schools market?

Andy Taylor

Genuinely learned a lot from this.

I recall that each series of schools programmes on the BBC had to finish its run in early June before those other daytime exemptions - Cricket and Wimbledon.

In the U.S., there's no such restriction, not just for programs made for schools, but for ostensibly educational school assemblies held in-person. In fourth grade, they put on a 'heart health' stage show for my whole elementary school in the auditorium that turned out to be a 40-minute infomercial the whole time for Subway sandwiches.

There was an interesting period, around the 1996 circles rebrand when C4 began extending their hours. Eyebrows were raised when they started showing repeats of non-schools branded programmes individually late at night, with ads between them. They soon stopped that!

Andrew Coldrick

Does footage of any of those exist on YouTube or the like?

Michael Auld

An interesting postscript could be the renaissance of schools tv during the Covid period as a public service, where blocks of Bitesize were screened on CBBC in the morning, and on BBC Scotland channel as well.

And of course, thanks Matthew for this episode - this was nicely done. NB S4C provided Welsh schools programming from their very beginning, some grainy footage still survives. This is a brilliant upload here: https://youtu.be/OHp9plNI3pU

Yes, here in New Zealand, one of the main channels brought back its own schools programming schedules during lockdown in a throwback to the 70s/80s.

down here most people my age remember having this pervade their days home sick which somehow stuck around from 1997 until 2013 (Despite the ABC worm changing looks in the 2000s) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYLGJZkI2Pw

And of course, BART by Ruby and John Fogerty continued to be heard on Pages from Ceefax until its demise in 2012. It was actually the last song ever played on the show! Also, glad to see Engineering Annoucements get a shoutout. Current Affairs by Francis Monkman has been stuck in my head for weeks.

Correction at 17:10, the composer of the 1987 C4 music is Brian Bennett, not Bill.
