Holy shit. One of the most brutal episodes of TV I've ever seen.

man this episode is incredible and really expands upon Askeladd as a character. This ep really changes people's opinions on him, but in reality they've been doing this very thing the whole time for decades, the only difference is that we actually see from the victim's perspective a bit which makes what they do truly feel vile. Keep in mind Askeladd had no choice but to do this because they're stuck in a horrible blizzard with dwindling food and resources for around 100 men. They needed to do this to survive and get Canute where he needs to go. The only option is to raid the village for resources and kill them all so they don't at least have to suffer and starve, or potentially expose their position. The writing does this all while going even deeper into God, religion and philosophy. Any other show would have just done the raiding and shown how horrible it was.

Although we know Askeladd is not a good person, up until this point I felt that his role was glorified in a way. Like his charisma made you feel like he wasnt that bad. But, this episode hammered it in that he is goddam evil.
