how much time do you usually "waste" on the background and detailing it? Do you have any advice on a face that is facing us/ the viewer? I find it hard to do. I did a lot of photo studies and a lot of practise, but I just can't find the way to draw it like you or Wlop.

I know it's out of topic for this video but Do you (or did in the past) practice on paper for stuff like poses, faces etc.. or you always did everything digitally?

It depends quite a bit on the type of background of course - for this set it was mainly just figuring out the basic layout and perspective, and tuning it to support the character (so around 1-2hours). For the previous set's first piece, it was a lot more of an involved process setting up the background as it was less of a bg and more part of the character per se. Regarding faces, they can really vary wildly from person to person, so photo studies as a catch all might not help you learn to draw the type of face you want. A good way to deal with that might be to keep a folder of references which are closer to the face shape and structure you lean towards!

For my first year of drawing in 2012, and most of 2013 I was only on paper!
