I’m of the opinion that Dean is a first love for Rory, but he’s not a true love. They hang out and make out and can be cutesy at times, but I was never really a fan of his, after the first time he started being pushy and jealous. Dean is insecure, possessive, needy and emotionally manipulative, while Rory is naive and unable to speak her needs with him because she’s too scared to loose this first love. She has this idealistic version of the relationship because she’s searching for the stability her father never gave her. Dean just over does it. Jess on the other hand challenges her in a way and at the same time, shares similar family trauma. Unfortunately he has his own issues to deal with, which makes him almost react the same way Rory’s father does, by avoiding the hard stuff.

Emily was almost a good mother in this one. It was an episode that always stood out to me for the Lorelei/Emily plot.
