I know this is an older episode reaction but I wanted to answer your question on why Alex and Kara's father sacrificed his life to save John Jones (aka the alien)... So, from my understanding to this point we know that the danvers are scientists who have helped wayward aliens in the past understand their powers (aka Superman when he first arrived to earth 24 years prior to now) and when Superman placed Kara with the danvers hoping they would do the same for her that they did for him... So, from this we know Alex and Kara's father is a selflesss human being who empathizes with others well and when he understands fully of what's happening he'll go with his own knowledge and judgment of the individual. Now, fast forward to when he's on this mission. Dr. Danvers already doesn't trust his superior (aka Human Henshaw) and disagrees with the mission they were on once he figured out the alien they were hunting meant no harm.. and I assume he went to henshaw to try to persuade him to cancel the mission or at least change it's kill order to something else.. but human henshaw disagreed and proceeded... we don't know what went down in the forest before the death but I assume Dr. Danvers stepped inbetween the alien and henshaw to get him to drop his weapon and henshaw shot Dr. Danvers and John Jones retaliated and killed Human Henshaw and took his form... To get people to stop asking about what happened Alien Henshaw said he didn't remember what happend or how he was the lone survivor probably telling his superiors that the alien killed Dr. Danvers and he killed the alien in retaliation.. now to answer your question as to why Dr. Danvers did this (we can't truly know what went in his head but I like to believe he empathized with the Alien because of his connection with Kara and Superman who they were also the last of their kind and from another dead world...
