Volume 3 Chapter 74 / Chapter 241: Yun Yiyi, Unfathomable

As the sky dimmed, lanterns were lit in the corridors of the Yun Residence, and a good number of Shadowmoon Sword Sect disciples continued to patrol within the estate.

On the second-floor balcony of the main hall, Yun Yiyi, draped in a brocade blanket decorated with floating clouds, knelt in front of her favorite guqin.

Her slender fingers plucked notes that conjured images of ethereal mountain pavilions.

Every now and then, she would sneak a glance at the young man quietly listening beside her.

His cold, handsome face bore a pair of deep purple eyes, as beautiful as gemstones, capable of capturing the gaze of any woman, though they revealed no emotion.

She liked how Ye Anping looked like this, yet it also troubled her.

She simply couldn’t fathom what Ye Anping was thinking.

If asked, does Ye Anping like her? Yun Yiyi wasn’t confident she could answer “yes.”

She sensed he didn’t seem interested in her, as if he were only here to fulfill his parents’ wishes, reluctantly joining her household.

In the month since she had begun living with Ye Anping, Yun Yiyi often felt like she was met with indifference in return for her warmth.

Although he didn’t reject her, he certainly didn’t embrace her either.

Moreover…

The day the Shadowmoon Sword Sect was attacked, his junior martial sister from the Hundred Lotus Sect had chased after him, loudly declaring she wanted to marry him. Later, he snuck out to see that junior sister…

At this thought, Yun Yiyi’s fingers stopped strumming, her hands gently pressing down on the strings to silence them.

—Could it be that, in Ye Anping’s eyes, she was the villain who came between him and his junior sister?

—Should she ask him?

—But if she did, he surely wouldn’t tell her the truth; it would only make things harder for him.

Even so, Yun Yiyi could understand.

After all, that junior sister and he had grown up together as childhood friends, while she herself had known him for only a month.

It was natural for Ye Anping to feel indifferent toward her right now.

But she was determined to make Ye Anping see her value, and, over time, to shift his attention from that junior sister to herself.

Furrowing her brows slightly, Yun Yiyi recalled something Elder Zhuang Yan had said a few days ago while she and Yun Jiujiu were locked in the dungeon.

It seemed Zhuang Yan had kidnapped them because of “Yun Kunwu.” In other words, the incident wasn’t an attack by external cultivators but an internal conflict within the Shadowmoon Sword Sect.

As the saying goes, family shame shouldn’t be publicized.

Ye Anping had nearly lost his life because of this internal strife within the Shadowmoon Sword Sect. How would he view her, then? And how would he view the Shadowmoon Sword Sect?

“Young Master Ye, I promise you, what happened a few days ago will never happen again.”

Ye Anping paused mid-sip of his tea, shaking his head. “I don’t mind. Who could have anticipated that an intruder would kidnap someone within the Shadowmoon Sword Sect? As your husband, I should have shielded you that night. If anything, you, Young Mistress Yun, were almost harmed. I should be the one…”

Before he could finish, Yun Yiyi reached up and pressed her fingertip to his lips, interrupting him.

“Young Master Ye, since you married into my family, you’re my husband. And as the lady of this place, it’s my duty to make you feel at home. Rather than words of comfort, I’d rather hear you complain.”

“Complain?”

“Yes… for example…” Yun Yiyi paused, playfully continuing, “What’s going on with your Shadowmoon Sword Sect? Why did your internal matters drag me into it? Aren’t Shadowmoon Sword Sect disciples supposed to handle these things better? Such…”

Ye Anping merely shook his head, smiling. “I’ve never thought that way.”

“Really?” Yun Yiyi looked skeptical. “If that’s how you feel, just say so.”

Ye Anping sighed softly, pondering for a moment before saying, “I really don’t harbor complaints, but there’s certainly something strange about this. You, Young Mistress Yun, along with the second and third Young Mistress, were attacked on the same day. The people who kidnapped you only wanted lives, nothing else. What was their objective?”

Resting her chin on her hand, Yun Yiyi thought for a moment, a hint of puzzlement appearing on her face.

“That night, when my sister and I were locked in the dungeon, Elder Zhuang told us that neither I, nor Jiujiu, nor Yun Xi, were qualified to assume the position of Sect Master, and that only his disciple Yun Kunwu was worthy. Furthermore, the disciples killed in the Shadowmoon Sword Sect had all been from Yun Kunwu’s faction.”

“Yun Kunwu?”

"Yes, the eldest son of the Yun family, supposedly my elder brother, but as far as I know, he perished long ago, reportedly struck down by lightning during a tribulation. Yet Zhuang Yan kept insisting he’s confined in the Shadowmoon Sword Sect’s forbidden grounds…”

“Should we have an elder investigate the forbidden grounds?”

“The Shadowmoon Sword Sect’s forbidden area, the Thousand Sword Pool, is heavily warded. Only my father can lift the wards, and he would have to personally leave seclusion to do so; no one else can enter.”

Ye Anping followed her line of thought and added, “Then if only Sect Master Yun can open the wards, Zhuang Yan’s effort seems pointless.”

“Exactly. That’s what puzzles me.” Yun Yiyi nodded. “He seemed so confident back then, as if he had a way to release Yun Kunwu from the forbidden grounds. But how could he bypass the wards my father set up…”

“So, we just wait and see?”

“I can hardly sit still, but there’s not much else to go on right now.”

Yun Yiyi sighed softly, a touch of weariness showing in her face.

Then, she scooted a little closer to Ye Anping and tilted her head, saying, “Enough about this. Young Master Ye, might you join me tonight in the hot spring?”

Ye Anping’s expression remained composed, and instead of responding immediately, his gaze shifted toward Huang Quan, the servant girl standing nearby.

Receiving his look, Huang Quan quickly caught on and, summoning her courage, stepped forward to say, “Young Mistress, this might not be appropriate. You and Young Master Ye are not yet married.”

Yun Yiyi’s brows knit at once as she shot Huang Quan a sharp look, surprised at the girl’s audacity.

Did she grow a spine overnight? How dare she interrupt her master!

“Huang Quan…”

Huang Quan hunched her shoulders in alarm but, glancing at her young master and recalling the secret he’d entrusted to her, took another deep breath and added, “Yo-Young Mistress, please don’t take offense, but it’s a warning spoken in earnest.”

Ye Anping quickly chimed in to support her. “Young Mistress Yun, Huang Quan’s words, though blunt, come from loyalty. Meeting in such a manner before the ceremony may indeed be unseemly.”

Yun Yiyi pouted slightly, casting a brief glare at Huang Quan.

Then, forcing a polite smile, she said, “Yes, you’re right; it might indeed be inappropriate. Very well, Young Master Ye, I’ll continue to rest. Tomorrow, would you accompany me to Jiuquan Peak? I’d like to check in on Yun Jiujiu.”

“Of course, I’ll gladly accompany you.” Ye Anping, understanding her intent, rose and gave a slight bow. “In that case, I’ll take my leave for now.”

With that, he turned and headed downstairs to his own quarters.

Watching him leave, Huang Quan suddenly grew pale.

She could already sense that she’d likely face a severe scolding from her mistress afterward. But if it was for the young master, what was a little reprimand? She could bear it!

“Huang Quan…”

“Ah… at your service, Young Mistress.”
