Chapter 12: It Won't Stop Me
The tiny Teddy bear clung to the door and didn't listen to Li Pai's command. Li Pai chuckled. If he couldn't control the female ghost, then he surely couldn't control this Teddy bear.
Li Pai extended his hand again and placed it on the raised bandages. This time, the Teddy bear couldn't resist and charged towards Li Pai with its short legs. It accidentally bumped into Li Pai's leg and then swung its small arms in an attempt to attack him. Its actions were more cute than threatening.
Li Pai couldn't help but smile at the sight. The Teddy bear seemed to feel mocked by his smile and fiercely kicked towards Li Pai. However, the recoil from the kick made it fall onto its back, looking even more adorable.
Li Pai decided to stop teasing the Teddy bear and picked it up, holding it in front of him. The Teddy bear flailed its arms, trying to resist, but its short limbs couldn't reach Li Pai.
"Can you understand me?" Li Pai asked the Teddy bear, looking at the button eyes.
The Teddy bear didn't seem to care and simply lowered its head, not even glancing at Li Pai.
"Alright, enough playing around," Li Pai said, taking out his deathhammer. This time, he didn't touch the bandages but instead moved along the slope...
The Teddy bear couldn't bear it anymore, turned its head, and looked at Li Pai. It seemed to be feeling wronged.
"I'm asking, you answer. Got it?" Li Pai asked directly.
The Teddy bear nodded hesitantly, and Li Pai understood that the plush toy couldn't speak. That was reasonable; after all, its mouth was sewn shut with threads.
Li Pai looked around, but there was no pen or paper on the desk. Even if there was, the Teddy bear probably couldn't hold them. So, he decided to keep things simple.
"Are you familiar with this house?" Li Pai asked straightforwardly. If this little creature knew the house well, it might help him find some hidden clues.
After a moment of hesitation, the Teddy bear nodded.
"What exactly happened here?" "Why was Elora's body dismembered?" "Who are the female ghost and the monster on the second floor?" "And what terrible thing is on the attic?" Li Pai bombarded the Teddy bear with questions, trying to gather more information.
The Teddy bear seemed to be struggling to respond, nodding and shaking its head alternatively. Li Pai realized that it couldn't answer directly. Maybe it could only communicate in simple ways.
"Is the female butler the one who dismembered Elora?" Li Pai asked, changing his approach.
The Teddy bear nodded, seeming more certain this time.
"So... the female butler dismembered Elora, not to harm her, but for some unavoidable reason?" Li Pai connected the dots.
The Teddy bear agreed with a firm nod.
"The female ghost on the second floor wanted to possess Elora's body, right?" Li Pai felt like he was on the right track and continued asking.
The Teddy bear nodded once again.
"So... the female butler dismembered Elora to prevent the female ghost from possessing her body?" Li Pai pieced together the clues.
The Teddy bear confirmed Li Pai's thoughts with another nod.
"Obtained some clues." "Exploration Progress: 40%"
Li Pai was delighted. He hadn't expected that asking questions could increase his exploration progress. The system wouldn't lie, so the information from the Teddy bear was authentic. Therefore, the female ghost was an antagonist NPC, and the Teddy bear and the female butler were friendly NPCs!
Li Pai still couldn't understand why the female butler chased him with a knife. Was it just out of hospitality, and he had misunderstood her intentions? Also, why was he drugged with the red tea?
For now, it didn't matter. He already had 40% exploration progress, and he could leave this haunted place soon.
"By the way, will I die if I go to the attic?" Li Pai asked the question he was curious about.
The Teddy bear hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
"As expected, it's deadly there. The attic is an absolute no-go!" Li Pai warned himself again.
Li Pai looked at the Teddy bear in his hand and thought for a moment. It seemed like there were no more questions he could ask. For yes-or-no questions like these, he needed to gather more information first, or it could take forever to get the answers.
Now, he needed to find the remaining leg on the third floor.
"Do you know where her right leg is?" Li Pai stared at the Teddy bear and asked.
The Teddy bear subconsciously nodded, then immediately covered its mouth. Its panicked expression gave away the answer.
"Take me there," Li Pai commanded.
The Teddy bear desperately shook its head, firmly refusing Li Pai.
"Don't think being a dismembered body would stop me!" Li Pai pulled up his pants and glanced at the bandages below.
It was obvious what he meant, and the Teddy bear trembled. It never thought that someone would actually think of doing that...
"That's going too far!”
