Chapter 15: The Reason Behind "Broken Beauty"

"I'd better hold onto it for now," Li Pai refused the housekeeper's suggestion. In this haunted place, it was better to be cautious. With the Teddy bear in his hands, he wasn't afraid of the housekeeper doing anything reckless.

The housekeeper looked helpless but had no other choice. "So, Miss Elora's soul is inside this Teddy bear, right?" Li Pai went straight to the point.

"That's correct," the housekeeper glanced at the Teddy bear and nodded. She didn't bother hiding her slip of calling it "Mistress."

Li Pai was satisfied. Finally, someone he could talk to. It was much more comfortable than communicating with the Teddy bear.

"What exactly happened in this house? Why was Elora dismembered? And what's the deal with that female ghost upstairs? And what's in the attic?" Li Pai poured out all his doubts at once. According to the setting of this place, if the housekeeper could provide useful clues, his exploration progress might increase. Perhaps he could even reach 50% without finding the missing arm.

The housekeeper seemed conflicted and looked at the Teddy bear, seemingly seeking its approval. The Teddy bear nodded.

Helpless, the housekeeper knew she had no choice. As long as the Teddy bear was in Li Pai's hands, she couldn't risk any disobedience. She reluctantly agreed to answer his questions.

"It all started hundreds of years ago..." The housekeeper began her explanation. "Grace Beth, Miss Elora's ancestor, was the most powerful female demon hunter in the world."

"One day, after she killed a terrifying demon, she fell under the curse of the dying monster. The curse penetrated deep into the Beth family bloodline."

"From then on, no male was born in the Beth family. And on their 36th birthday, without exception, the women of the Beth family would fall into a deep sleep. No matter what methods were used, they couldn't be awakened, and their bodies gradually lost vitality, eventually leading to their deaths," the housekeeper said solemnly.

"No males? How does the family continue then? Marry into the family?" Li Pai mumbled.

The housekeeper found the term "marry into the family" amusing. "It's almost like that," she explained. "When the women of the Beth family reach the appropriate age, they look for outstanding males to stay overnight at the house..."

"Afterward, they give the men some money and ask them to leave. That's how the Beth family's bloodline continues," she elaborated.

Li Pai's face twitched. So, it was basically a one-night stand in exchange for money. What's the difference from selling themselves...

"What about your mistress? Has she had any children?" Li Pai asked a question unrelated to the main storyline.

"My mistress..." The housekeeper looked at the Teddy bear with a melancholic expression. "In this generation of the Beth family..."

"The family fell into decline, and there wasn't much valuable stuff left in the house. She couldn't find any suitable pursuers," the housekeeper sighed.

Li Pai understood. This generation's mistress, Elora Beth, was poor and not interested in the demon hunter profession, so she faced great difficulties.

Li Pai couldn't help but chuckle. It seemed her standards were too high, and she didn't have any money.

"But what does all of this have to do with what's happening here? Isn't a curse enough? Why dismember the body?" Li Pai continued to question.

"The curse not only continues through the bloodline, but it also passes down Grace Beth's power to her descendants. All the members of the Beth family have powerful bloodlines and are top-tier demon hunters."

"As a result, many monsters targeted the Beth family. They all wanted to obtain a Beth family member's physical body. In earlier years, the Beth family had enough strength to deal with them, but this generation..." The housekeeper glanced at the Teddy bear, feeling embarrassed. "The mistress seems uninterested in the demon hunter profession, so..."

The housekeeper's words hinted that Elora was not as strong as her ancestors, and her current interests didn't lie in being a demon hunter.

Li Pai understood. This generation's mistress, Elora Beth, was not only poor but also uninterested in her family's heritage. It left her in a precarious situation.

Li Pai couldn't help but smile. The Teddy bear waved its limbs, seemingly protesting. These two had no sense of face! They were laughing at such a moment!

"That's enough!" Li Pai stood up and interrupted the housekeeper's further explanation.

The housekeeper: ??? What's going on? You asked me questions, and then you don't want to hear the answers? What's the situation!

My emotions were just getting there, and now you're stopping me!

Li Pai paid no attention to the housekeeper's puzzled expression. He had decided to leave this haunted place and never come back. Nothing in this house concerned him.

"Exploration progress reaches 50%, triggering a timed quest. Accept?"

Just as Li Pai was about to exit the game, the system's prompt rang in his mind again.

"A timed quest?" Li Pai was taken aback. Did the system really play tricks like this? Offering timed quests at this point?

"Since I can leave now, let's see what this timed quest is about." Curiosity got the better of him, and Li Pai decided to check out the quest.

"Accept." Li Pai replied in his mind.

"Accepting timed quest."

"Quest Objective: Defeat the evil spirit on the second floor within 30 minutes."

"Quest Reward: Level 1 demon hunter strength."

"Quest Reward: Basic demon hunter set."

The system's voice echoed in Li Pai's mind.
