Chapter 16: Please Be Humane

"Demon hunter strength level 1 and a demon hunter set..." Li Pai mumbled, realizing that the game was getting interesting. However, the thought of facing the terrifying ghost on the second floor made him hesitate. The demon hunter's crossbow had been completely ineffective against her. How could he possibly kill her?

"Leave the game," Li Pai muttered to himself.

"During the timed quest, you cannot leave the game," the system countered.

"Damn! I got played!" Li Pai's mouth twitched. He had almost forgotten that this was a game in the underworld. He was too careless! He could have left smoothly, but now...

Half an hour! A lot could happen in half an hour! Killing the ghost on the second floor... It was terrifying! The demon hunter's crossbow was like shooting air at her, how could he kill her?

And he didn't even know what the consequences would be if he failed the quest. What if there were some punishments...

The housekeeper, Leck, looked at Li Pai with a puzzled expression. Was this visitor out of his mind? She didn't dare to interfere too much, as her mistress was still in Li Pai's hands.

"That... please continue, tell me more about that ghost," Li Pai sat down and asked the housekeeper for more information. Since he couldn't leave, he might as well try to understand more about this place. Perhaps gaining more exploration progress would unlock some life-saving items.

"During the timed quest, you cannot leave the game."

The system's prompt didn't allow him to leave.

"Fine! I was too careless!" Li Pai's face twitched. He almost forgot that he was in an underworld game. Now, he was stuck here for half an hour! The timing was critical!

"Alright, then... what's the deal with that ghost?" Li Pai asked the housekeeper to continue.

"The ghost is very powerful, but it has one weakness—it cannot act in sunlight," the housekeeper explained. "However, it can bypass this weakness by taking over someone's body. Ordinary bodies cannot withstand its evil aura and would collapse at the slightest movement."

"So, it targeted the Beth family, which has cursed bloodline power. Since our weapons can't drive her away, we can only temporarily trap her with the artifacts accumulated by the Beth family and scatter our mistress's body parts around."

"As long as her body isn't pieced together, the ghost cannot possess her directly," the housekeeper continued.

Li Pai nodded, understanding the logic behind their actions.

"So, is there any way to kill her?" Li Pai asked, getting to the point. Killing her with sunlight was impossible, and the system only gave him half an hour.

"The ghost is in a state where normal physical attacks don't work on her," the housekeeper explained. "And my mistress's soul is currently residing in the Teddy bear; she cannot use her witchcraft effectively. It's almost impossible to deal with her directly."

"But I found a method in the demon hunter's diary passed down by previous family heads," the housekeeper said, taking out an old journal from the sofa. "It says that if you can't directly attack the soul of such an ghost, you can try to let her possess a body."

"Once she possesses a body, you can use a weapon with divine attributes to attack, and that should be enough to kill her."

"Your crossbow is capable of doing that," the housekeeper pointed at Li Pai's arm.

"Is that so? That sounds simple! Just piece Elora's body together, let the ghost possess her, and then I shoot it with the demon hunter's crossbow," Li Pai said with a smile.

The Teddy bear: ????

Please be human!

Can you come up with a plan any more sinister than that? It's not even your own body, so why don't you feel bad about it!

"Unfortunately, that won't work," the housekeeper explained. "My mistress's bloodline power is too strong. Even if the ghost possesses her, the effectiveness of a divine attack might be limited."

The Teddy bear stared at the housekeeper. What does that have to do with her bloodline? Even if it works, it shouldn't be using her body to deal with the ghost!

And... you actually seriously considered it!

That’s just too much!

The Teddy bear felt like crying, but unfortunately, its eyes were made of buttons, and it couldn't cry.

"So, I've been trying to create a body that could attract and accommodate the ghost," the housekeeper continued. "I was close to success, but I made a mistake due to my lack of experience, and the test subject escaped..."

"Also, there have been fewer visitors lately, and the test materials are running short."

The housekeeper sighed, full of regret.

"Test subjects... materials..." Li Pai's face twitched, and he seemed to recall something. The drowsy tea... the sound of chopping bones in the kitchen...

Phew... Thankfully, he was vigilant. Otherwise...

"That test subject is probably hiding in the second-floor bathroom now," the housekeeper said. "It's a bit afraid of me, so it doesn't come out often. I haven't paid much attention to it."

"The second-floor bathroom..." Li Pai understood. The creature he encountered in the last room on the second floor must be the test subject created by the housekeeper.

"And it coexists peacefully with the ghost on the second floor?" Li Pai asked curiously.

"The test subject's physical attacks are ineffective against the ghost," the housekeeper explained. "As for the ghost, I hope she will possess the test subject's body."

"But unfortunately, the test subject has too many souls inside, making it difficult for the ghost to act," the housekeeper sighed.

"Too many souls inside..." Li Pai was taken aback. Did that mean it was a patchwork of multiple visitors?

A Frankenstein's monster!

It was a bit cruel!

"If my mistress could regain her strength..." the housekeeper said with hope. "With her witchcraft, she should be able to easily extract the souls from the test subject's body. Then, I can lure the ghost into the test subject's body."

"Once that happens, you can use the demon hunter's crossbow to deal with it," the housekeeper suggested.

Unfortunately, Elora was currently trapped in a Teddy bear's body, unable to use her witchcraft properly. There was no way she could help at the moment.

Li Pai roughly understood the method to kill the ghost now. It wasn't too dangerous for him; he only needed to deliver the finishing blow. But to help Elora regain her strength...

Li Pai had no idea how to do that. The main quest was to awaken Sleeping Beauty, but the system didn't provide any guidance on how to achieve that.

"Oh no!!!" Suddenly, the housekeeper's face turned pale. "The artifact suppressing the ghost is about to give in! Her strength is about to recover!"

"In less than half an hour, she'll break free from the restraints and roam freely in this house!"

The housekeeper's eyes were filled with fear upon imagining that scenario..

If the ghost could move freely, it meant that she might come down to the first floor...

Li Pai felt a sense of urgency. He understood that it was a critical moment.
