Chapter 39: This Is Not Punishment!

"This matter is quite important. I think we should discuss it together with the rest, the both of you, follow me."

Charlotte thought for a moment and quickly made a decision. She also hoped to find a way to lift the curse.

"Sister Charlotte, carry me on your back."

Élise extended her hands toward Charlotte.

Well, she just didn't feel like walking. Charlotte ignored Élise. They had similar body sizes, and carrying her would make her uncomfortable, plus Charlotte didn't like having someone on her back.

"I'll carry you."

Seeing that Élise made no move to carry her little sister, Li Pai voluntarily crouched down in front of Élise.

"Hehe~"

Élise happily jumped onto Li Pai's back. Having someone carry her meant she didn't have to walk, which was quite convenient.

Li Pai carried Élise and followed behind Charlotte. When he saw Charlotte heading towards the wall, he was puzzled.

"Aren't we going through the door?"

Li Pai asked in surprise.

"Hm? Is this your first day being a ghost? We are a ghost, we can phase through solid matters like walls at will, why would we use something like doors?”

Charlotte said coldly.

"This..."

Li Pai stood still, puzzled.

Now that he thinks about it, it’s true, he had never heard of a ghost who used a door before.

'So… Why can’t this girl do that?'

Li Pai looked at Snow White.

Snow White turned her head to the side, suddenly finding the wall highly interesting to look at..

Whether a ghost can pass through a wall or not also depends on the wall. The walls in the Elora family's home can't be passed through. How was she supposed to know that this particular wall could...

"Wait a moment!"

Charlotte suddenly shivered all over.

"When you came in, did you use the room door?"

Charlotte suddenly looked at Li Pai, pointing a finger at the door. Surprisingly, her previously arrogant tone was mixed with fear.

"Yes," Li Pai replied simply. After saying that, he felt something was wrong with Charlotte's reaction. What could make her feel scared? Could it be...

"Crap! Did you make eye contact with the eyes on the door? Did you stare at it?" Charlotte asked urgently.

"I think I glanced at it briefly, what’s wrong?”

When he had stared at it, he had felt something odd. Although it was just a painted eye, Li Pai always had the feeling that it was staring at him.

"The eyes on the door were painted by that woman. She possesses a magic mirror, allowing her to observe any location she paints an eye on. Her curse drains the energy of souls, and she likely assumed we had already perished, so she never actively activated these eyes. This is why we usually avoid the door panels to avoid attracting attention. If she discovers our presence now..."

Charlotte paused at this point. That wicked woman would definitely go to great lengths to exterminate them.

"We can't wait; we have to have a meeting now!" Charlotte said and immediately passed through the wall. Li Pai, carrying Élise, hurried to follow.

In the corridor, Charlotte rang a bell. The sound echoed, and two girls who looked quite similar to her appeared on the wall.

"Oi! Come out! Let's have a meeting! Hurry, gather upstairs!" Charlotte said very seriously.

"Another meeting? Is Léa here to feed again?" A girl with a ponytail asked, looking around, and then her gaze suddenly fell on Li Pai.

"Who is this? Is he the food you brought? Why did Élise let him carry her? I want him to carry me too!" The girl rushed up to Li Pai, full of determination.

"No! He's mine! Sister Camille, I won't give him to you!" Élise pouted and outright refused. If Li Pai were taken from her, would that mean she had to walk by herself? That was not acceptable!

"Hmph! If I can't have him, you won't either! I'll kill him right now!" Dark energy started to emanate from Camille's eyes.

Li Pai felt a knot in his chest. Was this little girl so consumed by Envy?

"Envy?" Li Pai seemed to catch onto something in his mind, but this wasn't the time to think about it. He needed to appease this little girl who wanted to kill him.

"Okay, how about this? I can carry one of you in front," Li Pai made a constructive suggestion. Since they were all spirits, there was no weight, and carrying one then the other wouldn't be a problem.

Camille tilted her head in thought and then nodded, allowing the dark energy to recede from her eyes. Li Pai stepped forward, extending his arms to hold Camille.

Camille leaned against Li Pai, looking pleased with herself.

At that moment, a wave of energy suddenly surged through the area. Everyone turned to look. On the door panel of Élise's room, the painted eye suddenly blinked! The dark red eyeball slowly rotated and faced Li Pai and the others.

"No! The eye is activated! We've been discovered!" Charlotte exclaimed in horror. The other young girls also paled. The activation of the eye meant that the woman was using her magic mirror to observe them. She had discovered that they, the surviving sisters, were still here!

Before they could react further, the eyes on the doors of several other rooms began to turn toward them one by one. Li Pai also felt a tremendous pressure. The sensation of being spied on was quite unsettling.

"Go! Let's head upstairs!" Charlotte took the lead, rushing toward the stairs. The others followed closely.

On the first-floor hallway, two girls peeked out from the walls.

"Charlotte, what's going on? Why did you ring the bell? Is Léa here?"

"Oooooh! She's here!? I'm starving!" A girl with twin ponytails exclaimed.

When she saw Li Pai, her eyes lit up. "Food!" She immediately rushed out of the wall.

"Sophie, it's not time to eat now! Look over there!"

Charlotte pointed to the room doors. Sophie turned her head and shivered.

"The painting eyes... She found us! We're in trouble... We're done for..."

Sophie stomped her foot in frustration. "Anyway, if we're going to die regardless..."

She looked up at Li Pai. "Just let me eat him first."

Sophie then rushed toward Li Pai, her face filled with hunger.

"Stop! Don't do this! It's not time to eat now! Let's go into the room first."

Charlotte, among the group of young girls, remained relatively calm. She pulled Sophie and guided her into the wall.

Li Pai breathed a sigh of relief. He felt like he had walked into the Kingdom of Women like Luffy from Léa Piece, and everyone wanted to eat him. It was terrifying. However, the recent behavior of Sophie confirmed his suspicions.

It seems the seven girls correspond to the seven deadly sins! Pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust.

So far, we have seen laziness 'Élise', pride 'Charlotte', Envy 'Camille', and it's likely that the recent girl, Sophie, represents gluttony. This leaves wrath, greed, and lust...

The first two, Li Pai can imagine how their curse would affect them, but the last one... he doesn't even want to think about it! No way! Absolutely not!
