Chapter 32: Mother's Sense of Security
(Yue(♀))
Having obtained Little Blue as my familiar, I felt like my battle hadn't been in vain. However, now wasn't the time for reflection and celebration, nor was it the time to succumb to exhaustion and just collapse.
The throne room was now accessible, but no one had opened the large doors to enter. Perhaps the assassin had been killed by my attack, maybe he had gone to attack other students, or maybe he was still lurking outside...
Regardless of the possibilities, I had to take the risk and go out.
Laphae might be in danger, and I had to stay alert.
I had a little over 500 mana left, which was scarce, but it should be enough for one more all-out Magic Enhancement and Fireball. It should be enough.
I couldn't dwell on it too much; the more I thought about it, the more I'd lose my nerve. So, cautiously, I slowly opened the large doors and peered outside.
—I saw a charred corpse.
I breathed a sigh of relief instantly. The assassin hadn't withstood my attack; although he hadn't turned into ashes, he was dead. It seemed my judgment was correct, and my magic was indeed quite powerful.
Now, I felt even more relieved.
I placed Little Blue on my head and quickly ran up the labyrinthine passage. I didn't know where Laphae might be, but I had to rely on my instincts to find her.
If anything had happened to Laphae, I would have nightmares for the rest of my life.
But before I had run for long, I stopped and relaxed completely in an instant.
"Yue(♀)! Thank goodness, you're safe!"
My mother blinked and appeared in front of me, embracing me tightly.
"Mother, how did you get here?"
"After such a major incident, how could I not come? I was so worried!"
My mother touched me up and down, relieved to see that I was uninjured.
"Yue(♀), you encountered an assassin, didn't you?"
"Yes, I did. A level 50 assassin. He was outside the throne room, and he's already dead."
In front of my mother, I wanted to receive praise, feeling a bit proud.
My mother raised an eyebrow in surprise. "You killed him?"
"Yes. Thanks to the skill you taught me, 'Magic Enhancement.'"
Without 'Magic Enhancement,' I wouldn't have been able to win, even with the 'All Laws' skill. So, I told the truth.
"...This is your own ability. I should have told you that 'Magic Enhancement' is a special skill I developed on my own based on 'Mana Release' after countless battles. I once taught this skill to all my subordinates when I was the captain of the Royal Guard, but no one was able to learn it. Until now, you're the only one who has learned this skill that your mother created."
Indeed, 'Magic Enhancement' wasn't learned from a skill book or taught at the Royal Junior Academy. It came from my mother, Lamire.
During my time at the Royal Junior Academy, we were taught three basic skills: Magic Refinement, Magic Manipulation, and finally, Mana Release. When learning 'Mana Release,' my mother told me that she possessed an advanced version of it called 'Magic Enhancement,' so I learned that instead. After learning 'Magic Enhancement,' it became impossible for me to learn 'Mana Release' because, as my mother said, 'Magic Enhancement' was an advanced version of 'Mana Release,' and the principles were the same. However, it was more complex and harder to control, making it impossible to stack both.
I had to admit that even though my mother called herself mediocre, she was undoubtedly a genius.
The number of inherent attribute points didn't determine everything, and my mother was the living proof of that statement. She was the strongest in the Dolge Kingdom, and even if she claimed to be the strongest on the entire continent of Taia, few would dare to challenge that claim.
This was my mother, Lamire. She came from a commoner background, had mediocre attribute values, but step by step, she had reached the pinnacle of the continent.
For me, being by my mother's side gave me a strong sense of security. So, after making sure that Laphae had safely returned to the surface, I relaxed and nestled into my mother's embrace, drifting off into a deep sleep.
"Goodnight, Yue."
Lamire smiled and kissed her daughter's forehead, then lifted the princess into her arms. She glanced curiously at the deep blue slime that had hopped from her daughter's head to her belly.
"This... is Yue(♀)'s familiar? Yue's first familiar is a slime..."
The number of familiars one could have was limited, so it was uncommon for someone to contract a low-level creature like a slime. However...
‘Well, it's not a big deal. It might be weak, but it's cute enough.’
With that in mind, she carefully carried her sleeping daughter toward the throne room.
There was a hint of a killing intent in her eyes.
"It's better for me not to find out who did this. Otherwise, I'll make them pay in blood."
