Hey all!

Hope you’ve all been well! I’m on a slight production break and currently recharging, but I have another quick lore drop for you all!

This one is about Orrin’s Command ability. This will help further explain the most recent episodes 382-392, as well as 313-316 (Arlo and Kass vs Spectre HQ.)

To start, Orrin’s Command ability is an impressive 8.6, making him the second-most powerful known character in unOrdinary. This places him ahead of both John and Sera, with only Jane ranking above him.

His ability has a variety of uses and mechanics, which I’ll go through from the simplest to the most complex (lowest to highest cost.)

Passive: Orrin’s passive makes him very persuasive and charismatic. It’s very easy for him to sway people onto his side, but nobody really knows why :\

Mental Link: Orrin forms a mental link with his target, allowing him to access their minds and inject minor thoughts of his own. Direct eye contact and a voice trigger are required to establish the mental link. Mental Link is the foundation for all of his techniques; without this connection, none of his other mental abilities can be used effectively.

Command: Orrin is able to inject commands directly into his target’s mind. These commands must be limited to a single word, but are nearly impossible to resist due to the high level he has attained with his ability. Direct commands also have a range limit. If Orrin is too far from his target, he cannot issue an effective command.

Orrin can also impose conditions on his targets, like he did with Kayden in Episode 311. These conditions must involve a simple, non-intrusive action. But unlike direct commands, they have virtually no range limit, and are relatively low-cost. As long as Orrin has sufficient aura available, the imposed condition must be fulfilled.

Puppeteer: Orrin is able to command unconscious bodies of targets with whom he has previously formed a Mental Link. Because his target is unconscious, there is no mental resistance, allowing Orrin to issue simple commands and control them at will. Aura cost depends on the level of his puppet and the number of puppets under his control.

Possession: Orrin’s most powerful technique allows him to directly possess one of his linked targets. It’s also his most expensive technique, since he has to suppress his target and transfer his entire consciousness into their body. Possession has a range limit, with the aura cost increasing the farther away the target is. Once successful, Orrin can use the possessed body as if it were his own, ability and all. The higher the level of the possessed body, the more the aura it costs.

Possession is a particularly risky technique to use. While in this state, Orrin’s original body becomes unconscious, meaning he must position it somewhere safe where it can be protected. While it isn’t strictly required, Orrin’s extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of abilities is also really helpful here. It allows him to understand and effectively use whatever ability his target has. While using the target’s ability, Orrin also burns through their aura, often at a faster rate than he would his own. Because of this, a pretty realistic strategy would be for Orrin to possess a powerful target, use their ability until their aura is completely drained, and then take them out once they’re empty.

Other: On top of all this, Orrin also has an enormous pool of mental aura, which when expelled, generates an overwhelming wave of psychic force that can disarm his opponents. He can also use this immense mental strength defensively, essentially creating a mental force field around himself.

So far, in seasons 1 and 2 of unOrdinary, we’ve focused mostly on physical abilities. Although they may be flashy and impressive, mental abilities can sometimes be even more devastating. It’s also why I’m having so much fun writing this newest season xD

Other examples of mental abilities: Memory Recall (Keon), Paralysis (Tarik), Hypnosis (Farrah), Sensory Control (Sylvia), and Telekensis (Vaugh).

That’s all I have to share for now! Hope that was enjoyable and deepened your understanding of the world a little bit more! I do enjoy writing these, so I’ll try my best to find time to do more!

Thanks for reading! :D

I love these deep dives, tysm Uru!!

pyro_mantic

This is one of the coolest abilities in the whole series, even before reading everything it can do. If possible, could we get one on Paralysis (Tarik)? I would love to read a detailed comparison of how his usage has changed since getting damage to his eye.

Scarydescription! Really shows that having mental manipulation can be even scarier and more powerful than physical!

JMeisterJ

Pretty sure I called his passive being very persuasive. (I look forward to my check arriving in the mail uru XD) But this one was really cool to read through. Are we okay to talk about these else where? *Cough cough* on youtube *Cough cough* or do you want them to stay for patrons only?

Jkklol

What would happen if Orrin dies while possessing someone? I mean does his consciousness stay on the target or does he just die?

Böggie

"I command you to make me a Krabby Patty"

umi

Easily the most psychological horror like ability istg. I think we see this kind of power a lot but this one has a new layer of horror added. Specially the psychic wave, grinding down opponents AND BARRIERS like with Arlo Thank god the bureau cant extract his ability

Lumineac

This was very nice Thanks for the explanation uru

Toxic Ghost

If time manipulation isn’t a mental ability why can’t John copy it , Also how was Cameron able to use a type of telekinesis to move the dirt/rocks from William. I’m loving this season so far looking forward to seeing more Cameron. Have a nice break!

Always fascinating to read these ability deep dives, so I really do hope you can find the time to write some more! It's fun to find out more about mental abilities since they seem to be pretty uncommon in the story but pretty hard to actually protect yourself against. I was wondering if those conditions could still be triggered without his ability, but your deep dive answered that (no aura = no trigger)! It also makes sense that knowing the fundamentals of abilities (👀) would assist him whenever he'd possess people, but using people's abilities effectively and efficiently are two different things. Of course he'd burn through their aura faster since I doubt he'd know how to efficiently manage his victim's aura pool... A boost in charisma and persuasion as his passive is also very interesting; I never thought that we'd have passives that would affect others but here we are. Orrin would've a great snake oil salesman in some other life, but potential world domination better suited him in this life I guess. I'm excited to learn more about other mental abilities, especially the stronger ones that also have passives!! Thank you for feeding us with this info even while you're taking a production break! You and everyone on your team have worked hard this past arc, and the hard work's definitely paid off. Please continue to take care of yourself and take as many breaks as you need to so you don't burn out!!! Your most devoted fans will always understand and wait patiently for your return :3

I want to know these things too! I hope time manipulation will be a deep dive eventually because I’m really curious about it in general. Telekinesis would be a cool one too, maybe after we see more of Vaughn again 👀

Ohhh this explains the defense thank you. Also now realizing that the wave of intrusive thoughts (him sending “DIE” at them) was the disarming wave of psychic force lol. That makes sense. I was a little confused since he hadn’t made eye contact with all of them lol. Thank god they had barrier in that moment. Really shows how some abilities are just good/bad matchups and it isn’t all about levels, which I appreciate. Also loved the fact that his ability research experience aids his ability usage in possessed targets, I actually didn’t think of that. Given the nature of his ability, I could see Orrin getting more and more powerful as he descended more into bloodlust and mass manipulation over time. In fact, I don’t think he could’ve achieved this level had he not been so evil lol. Makes me wonder how someone with actual morals would feel having this ability/what level they would be. Okay I’m done thank you again Uru

M

Also, please do time manipulation at some point since we’re finally getting to see more of it and its uses! I do think it’s one of the abilities that has generated the most confusion. (Sera may or may not also be my favorite).

Dylan Renninger

If someone was naturally deaf/blind or had some sort of sensory deprivation ability ala headmaster Sylvia used on them, would Orrin's ability still work? Would it be like half effectiveness with only one sense and it wouldn't work if they couldnt see/hear him? Or does he just need eye contact and the commands make its way to the brain anyways even if they cant hear?
