Chapter 33: Still Damn Fair
Lot and Morgan reached an understanding on a certain matter—
Since they had already looted the White Dragon’s treasure, they couldn’t possibly leave the Red Dragon’s treasure untouched.
Neither of them felt the slightest guilt about this.
What was that saying again?
"A lean horse grows a long mane, a son taking from his father isn't theft."
Well, robbing the father-in-law could wait for later—
Right now, dealing with these treasures took priority.
Lot gave his orders:
"Load everything onto the ships. Send it all back to Orkney."
"Yes, Your Majesty!"
The knights from Orkney were stunned by the sheer amount of wealth before them.
It was only after hearing Lot’s command that they snapped out of their daze and rushed forward to carry the treasure chests.
As they did, Morgan turned to Lot and said, “Lot, we should entrust this treasure to someone reliable for transport.”
"Hmm..."
Lot pondered for a moment.
[Maybe Kay should handle it. If he can serve as a steward in the Round Table Knights, then escorting treasure shouldn’t be too difficult for him.]
[Wait, when did I decide Kay would be the steward?]
[Wasn’t he supposed to be handling knightly duties instead?]
Morgan was momentarily puzzled by Lot’s logic.
But after thinking it over—
It actually made sense.
Fine. Kay can handle the administrative affairs of the Round Table from now on.
Lot wasn’t wrong.
But if Kay were to take over governance—
Then who would lead the charge in battle?
Should they let Artoria take the lead?
Morgan decided she would first observe Artoria’s abilities before making a decision.
While Morgan was lost in thought, Lot spoke again.
"Morgan, let’s have Kay handle this."
"Alright."
And with that, the matter was settled.
With that taken care of, Lot and Morgan turned their attention to stabilizing Vortigern’s castle.
A sudden change in leadership had left the place in chaos.
As they walked through the streets, they witnessed numerous instances of soldiers and local thugs committing crimes.
They intervened where they could, swiftly dealing with offenders—
But the overall situation remained grim.
"Conquering a kingdom is easy—governing it is hard."
Lot sighed inwardly.
Morgan silently nodded in agreement.
"This is just one castle, and already things are this chaotic. If we were to conquer all of Britannia—or even expand into lands where we don’t even speak the language, like Francia—how much more difficult would it be?"
Her gaze drifted toward Lot.
"Lot, how do you think we should solve this problem?"
She wanted to see what he thought.
Lot fell into deep thought.
"To stabilize the city, we need to unite a certain group of people and have them enforce order. But which group should it be?"
"What if we get the nobles to maintain order?" Morgan suggested.
"The nobles?"
Lot instinctively shook his head.
"If you expect those fat old lords to maintain order instead of mourning for Vortigern, you’d have to give them more benefits. What, are we supposed to hand over 70% of our gains and only take 30% for ourselves? Not happening."
"Of course, you could let the nobles continue oppressing the common folk. They’d comply—but the moment Vortigern’s forces return, those same nobles would turn around and surrender."
"Hmm..."
Morgan wasn’t entirely sure what he meant by "fat old lords"—
But everything else he said made perfect sense.
You can't spoil the nobles
Then what should be done?
Morgan once again looked at Lot.
Lot was conflicted.
[If I had to choose, I'd rather let the common folk maintain order. Their lives are already hard enough, and they don’t need much. As long as we give them a share of the benefits, they’ll uphold order willingly.]
[But if I do this, it’ll be seen as radical—maybe even insane. The people around me might not accept it. Especially Morgan… What if she doesn’t agree? She’s the highest-ranking noble of this era, after all.]
[Should I really go through with this?]
Lot wanted the commoners to maintain order instead of the nobles?
Morgan, hearing his thoughts, was initially surprised—
But after a moment’s thought, she realized…
This was actually the best approach for them.
Yes, it was unconventional—
But she agreed with it.
In this era, she was probably the only noble who would.
Lot, I may be a noble…
But more importantly, I’m your wife.
We will rule Britannia together—
And I will not allow any noble to threaten us.
"Lot, you have a plan, don’t you? Then go ahead and do it."
Morgan could see him hesitating. She grabbed his hand and pointed toward the castle.
"Everyone here belongs to you now. You don’t need to worry about objections, and you don’t need to worry about resistance. I will support you completely."
"But… my ideas don’t align with the rest of the world," Lot said hesitantly.
"So what?"
Morgan smiled.
Then she asked him—
"Would you ever harm me? Or harm your people?"
"Of course not."
"Do you believe your idea is wrong? Do you think you’re a fool?"
"Absolutely not."
Lot understood what Morgan was telling him.
"So…" Morgan blinked playfully.
"Then just do it!"
"It doesn’t matter if you execute all the nobles or burn the whole castle down. Lot, follow your will."
"Even if you’re a madman, I’ll be your madwoman."
"But if we’re going to be mad, we’ll be the most glorious and legendary mad couple in history."
Lot grinned.
He finally made up his mind.
This was the only way to truly take this place from Vortigern—
To make it no longer his domain.
Lot ordered his army to gather all the nobles and commoners in the castle.
Standing atop a high platform, he looked down at them.
"I have come here to tell you three things."
"First, my name is not 'hey you.' I am King Lot of Orkney."
"Second, no evil will go unpunished."
"Third—"
"Everything will still be damn fair."
