Chapter 34: Vortigern’s Grievance
The nobles and commoners were stunned.
What did he just say?
Fairness?
Had he been reading too much about the Code of Chivalry?
Wasn’t this something you just heard once when you became a knight, nodded along, and then forgot about?
How could fairness even be a consideration here?
That’s what the nobles were thinking.
As for the commoners, their thoughts were even simpler:
Fairness? That was fairness for the nobles.
It had nothing to do with free folk or serfs like them.
Lot observed the expressions on their faces.
The commoners are accustomed to submitting to the nobles. It will be difficult to get them to step up and maintain order. However, if we cannot change their mindset, we can change the structure of this society itself.
In this era, power truly did belong to those of noble birth.
So, the nobles and the commoners must not be allowed to remain together.
"Men, arrest all the nobles!" Lot commanded his soldiers. "Remember, these nobles are our bargaining chips to demand ransom from Vortigern."
The nobles were frozen in shock.
But Lot’s soldiers followed his orders without hesitation. Under Artoria’s leadership, they swiftly captured the nobles.
The truly capable nobles were all on the frontlines with Vortigern.
Seizing those who remained behind was almost effortless.
Once the nobles were detained, Lot turned his attention to the commoners.
"These nobles followed the usurper Vortigern. We of Orkney will never recognize their claim to this land. Therefore, we declare that all these lands now belong to Orkney."
The commoners listened without showing much reaction.
Then, they heard his next words.
"And we will distribute this land to you."
Huh?
Hearing this, the eyes of the farmers and free folk lit up.
Land redistribution?
For us?
They stood in stunned silence for a moment.
Then, disbelief and joy shone in their gazes.
‘As expected, land is the foundation of a farmer’s livelihood,’ Morgan noted silently.
[But this alone isn’t enough. The farmers’ loyalty is still wavering. We must take further steps to ensure they are fully committed.]
‘Hmm? Their loyalty isn’t firm yet? Then what should we do?’
"And another thing," Lot continued, "since we do not recognize these nobles, their homes are also illegitimate. Now, we shall tear them down. Bring your tools and follow us to demolish these houses."
Morgan’s eyes lit up.
Clever. So this is the real plan.
Once the commoners destroy the nobles’ houses, they will have no choice but to stand with us.
After all, land can still be returned.
But if you demolish someone’s home, then try to make amends by handing back the rubble—
Would that even be possible?
I see, I see. I’m learning from this.
However—
The farmers hesitated.
No one dared to make the first move.
Lot grew anxious.
[These farmers still lack the courage. They are still afraid of noble bloodlines.]
Morgan heard his concern.
Bloodlines? Who dares to challenge mine?
Stepping forward, she addressed the farmers:
"I am Morgan Pendragon, the only daughter of Uther, King of Camelot. A bearer of the true Red Dragon bloodline, destined to rule all of Britain.
Now, I declare that those so-called noble titles are invalid. You may freely tear down their houses.
By the name of Pendragon, I proclaim that your actions are without sin."
The farmers had already been tempted.
Now, hearing Morgan’s words, the flames of desire in their eyes ignited.
Tear them down.
With some leading the way, the others followed suit, heading toward the nobles’ houses to begin demolition.
Lot watched the farmers at work and gave further instructions:
"Keep an eye on them. Make sure they do nothing beyond tearing down the houses. If anyone disobeys, execute them on the spot."
"Understood."
Artoria nodded.
[Unfortunately, this is the best we can do in this era. If left unchecked, these farmers could turn into some dangerous figures. Without sufficient technological and ideological progress, certain changes must be approached cautiously.]
Lot sighed with some regret.
Morgan sensed his disappointment.
Dangerous figure? What kind of danger can they bring?
Also, what kind of era was this perverted mutt aiming for?
She wasn't sure.
But since he had a vision, she would do everything in her power to help him realize it.
That meant she needed to keep growing stronger.
To create the ideal world that she and Lot envisioned, she had to bring all of Britain under her control.
Lot still felt some regret, but at least now he had secured a foundation.
The farmers were now his strongest supporters.
They might not yet be able to contribute to his army’s combat strength, but they could maintain order.
And as long as there were no nobles left to stir up trouble, things would remain stable.
Peace, at last.
Lot exhaled in relief.
Then, looking at Morgan, he remembered—his father-in-law was still in a perilous situation.
"Alright, it's time to force Vortigern to withdraw his troops."
<+>
For three days straight, Vortigern led fierce assaults against the White Chalk City.
This era lacked advanced siege weapons, but Vortigern himself was a force to be reckoned with.
Several times, he single-handedly climbed the city walls and slaughtered the defenders.
Again and again, he forced King Uther into direct combat.
Vortigern was already immensely powerful.
Forced to face him head-on, Uther barely survived each encounter, constantly on the verge of disaster.
At one point, he even suffered a grievous wound at Vortigern’s hands.
Victory was within reach.
Then, a messenger arrived from the rear, bringing grave news—
His stronghold had fallen. The city had surrendered.
"What did you just say?"
For the first time, Vortigern panicked.
In his mind, even if the defenders had been struggling, they should have at least held out until he conquered White Chalk City.
But now, not only had they been defeated, but they had already been conquered days ago.
At worst, he had expected the garrison to cower behind their walls, too afraid to fight, leaving him blind to enemy movements.
But this?
This level of incompetence was beyond belief.
He was this close to taking White Chalk City, and now they told him—
His home was already gone.
Vortigern turned back to look at White Chalk City.
A dark feeling crept into his heart.
If he failed to take the city now, he might never set foot in it again for the rest of his life.
