Volume 2 Chapter 101: The Cosmic Picture (Part 1)
"Why did you flee?"
Faced with the technology displayed by the Exif, the Bilusaludo ambassador suddenly spoke. His silver-black face reflected confusion—confusion directed at the Exif.
"Your technology should already be capable of terraforming any medium-mass planet within a habitable zone, correct? So why did you come here? To you, it shouldn't matter whether it's this planet or another, should it?"
"Why did you flee?"
The Bilusaludo ambassador asked the Exif emissary with a serious expression. This question was important to him, to them. They wanted to confirm how another civilization, one comparable to their own, had ultimately met its end.
And… what exactly had forced them to flee.
At this moment, all the humans present perked up their ears, listening intently. They, too, had no idea why two civilizations with such advanced technology had chosen to escape to Earth.
The technological prowess of the Bilusaludo had already been proven by the massive mothership orbiting Saturn, as observed through telescopes.
As for the Exif, their capabilities had just been demonstrated through the list of technologies they had offered humanity.
Both civilizations were centuries, if not millennia, ahead of humanity.
In human terms, their level of advancement was something humanity might barely begin to grasp ten centuries into the future.
One could say that these civilizations were nearing the limits of what humanity envisioned as conventional technological advancement—the kind of civilization capable of enveloping an entire star with a Dyson Sphere.
At their peak, the Bilusaludo and Exif likely surpassed a Kardashev Scale rating of 1.5, perhaps reaching 1.6.
For a civilization of such caliber, only a few cosmic-scale disasters—such as a black hole or neutron star suddenly intruding into their home system, or their star undergoing an abnormal fusion process—could force them into an exodus spanning centuries or millennia.
Black hole intrusions, neutron star disruptions, and unexpected stellar collapse...
The chances of these events occurring were astronomically low. Humanity found it highly unlikely that they had encountered not one, but two civilizations that had fled their home worlds due to such events.
If those weren’t the reasons… then what had forced them to flee?
It remained a mystery. The only clues lay in what the Bilusaludo had mentioned when they first made contact—the Demon Star and the Monster Phenomenon.
Monster Phenomenon. Demon Star. These terms seemed to hint at the downfall of civilizations in the current universe.
The first term—the Monster Phenomenon—based on the Bilusaludo's tone at the time, likely referred to the disasters humanity was currently facing: Godzilla and King Ghidorah.
The Bilusaludo appeared to be very familiar with such catastrophes, and they seemed confident in their ability to deal with them. If that was the case, then these threats were relatively minor. The real concern lay in the second term:
The Demon Star.
According to the Bilusaludo, they had fled because a Demon Star had directly collided with their home planet.
It had pushed their world into a black hole, consuming it entirely.
Did they attempt to resist? Perhaps. But they failed. Or maybe they didn't even try. The moment they saw it, they might have given up and prepared to flee.
Regardless of which it was, the implications for humanity were grim.
Because if they did resist, that would mean that even at their technological peak, the Bilusaludo were powerless to stop it.
And if they didn’t resist, it only further proved that the Demon Star was so overwhelmingly powerful that even a civilization of their caliber had no choice but to abandon their home and flee.
What kind of celestial body could force such an advanced civilization into exile? Aside from neutron stars, black holes, or white dwarfs, humanity couldn’t think of any other stellar objects capable of such destruction.
But could these celestial bodies really just happen to collide with a planet? And even if they did, none of the three mentioned would send a planet into a black hole upon impact.
Instead, their immense gravitational pull would merely tear the planet apart.
So, at least based on the description, these three types of stars were unlikely candidates for the Demon Star.
The Demon Star—
It was powerful enough to force a Type 1.6 civilization to flee, yet it wasn’t one of the three known dense stellar objects. In fact, it likely wasn’t a dense star at all.
So what was the Demon Star?
Humanity desperately wanted to know the answer.
And now… it seemed they were about to find out.
Perhaps the reason the Exif had fled their homeworld would finally provide humanity with an explanation.
“Mr. Bilusaludo, we are no different from you.”
“Our homeworld was also destroyed by the Demon Star. The idea of terraforming another planet is completely unrealistic—after all, those stars could always catch up. The only places where they are less likely to appear… are those where the Monster Phenomenon has already been triggered.”
“This star system is so valuable precisely because there have been no observed Demon Stars in the surrounding region. You should understand that better than anyone.”
The Exif emissary’s face showed an expression of distress.
His tone was almost like that of a parent explaining to a child why adults have to work as he responded to the Bilusaludo’s question.
Upon hearing this, the Bilusaludo ambassador furrowed his brow, deep in thought, and fell silent.
The words of the alien emissary had just revealed a massive amount of new information to humanity.
Their homeworld had also been destroyed by the Demon Star!
That revelation sent shockwaves through the minds of everyone present. And more importantly, they had just learned that there was a connection between the Demon Star and the Monster Phenomenon.
At the very least, based on what the Exif emissary had said, a Demon Star wouldn’t appear in places where the Monster Phenomenon had already occurred.
Did that mean the Monster Phenomenon and the Demon Star were connected?
Humanity pondered this, but the questions only multiplied.
Because from the way he spoke, it sounded like the Demon Star wasn’t actually a star at all—
“The Demon Star is alive, people of Earth.”
A lifeform.
As the Earth representatives wrestled with their thoughts, the Exif emissary suddenly interrupted their internal deliberations.
His golden eyes locked onto the human delegates, and with an unprecedentedly serious tone, he emphasized once again:
“The Demon Star is alive.”
"Come to think of it, people of Earth, you probably don’t know the real reason we left our homeworld, why we came to this planet, or the true nature of the Demon Star and the Monster Phenomenon, do you?"
He repeated his statement before turning to the human representatives and abruptly posing a question.
The delegates were stunned into silence.
Faced with this question, they had no choice but to silently nod, acknowledging their ignorance.
Seeing their response, the Exif emissary exchanged a glance with the Bilusaludo ambassador, then turned back to the humans, and with a smile, he said:
"Then allow me to explain—why we, the Exif, were forced to leave our homeworld."
