Volume 2 Chapter 102: The Cosmic Picture (Part 2)
After he made his proposal, not a single human present chose to refuse.
The delegates all accepted this great gift from Exif.
With the hosts' approval, the alien envoy conjured what appeared to be a painting from thin air—as if by magic. It was likely some kind of projection.
The canvas slowly unfurled in the air, initially blank. But under everyone’s gaze, colors gradually began to appear on the scroll.
At first, it showed people cultivating crops in what looked like farmland.
Then, once the scroll was fully opened, a voice with the distinct timbre of the Exif people rang out from the envoy's seat.
A recording, perhaps?
"We, the Exif, rose to prominence on a planet located in the third position from our parent star—just like this beautiful world of yours."
The scroll expanded endlessly until it reached the starry sky, where a planet orbited a giant star, much like the sun.
It looked astonishingly similar to Earth, with the same interwoven greens and blues, located in the third orbital path of its system.
"We thrived upon it, but that is not the focus of today’s presentation, so we’ll skip over that part for now."
After showing the planet, the scroll rapidly zoomed back in.
It zoomed to the level where people could be clearly seen, then switched to a first-person perspective—apparently to depict life amidst the primitive landscape.
But this was not the history they intended to show.
So just moments after switching to that perspective, the scroll accelerated rapidly, skipping over image after image.
Within those skipped scenes lay the entire rise of the Exif people—their full history of taking control of the planet.
Suddenly, the scroll leapt forward into the interstellar age.
"For this presentation, the details of our development are trivial. All you need to know is this: under the guidance of God, we progressed steadily. And after what would be over two thousand years by your calendars, we reached our peak."
With the voice as backdrop, the scroll once again zoomed out, returning to the stars.
This time, however, the cosmos no longer appeared as empty as it had at the beginning.
Countless spacecraft were seen arriving and departing from numerous planets. In the scroll, the Exif people now inhabited more than one world.
In this star system, the Exif lived on all four terrestrial planets within the habitable zone.
From space, one could see their massive cities, the dismantling of an entire planet for constructing a Dyson cloud to enshroud the star, trillion-ton spacecraft, and permanent energy stations orbiting gas giants.
There was no doubt—the Exif had reached the limits of what a conventional civilization could achieve.
They had surpassed humanity’s previously estimated 1.6 level civilization.
Their actual level might have reached 1.8.
In the scroll, the entire planetary system was governed by a non-coercive, loosely organized governmental body. There were no compulsory nations, no currency, no war, and no disease.
Every Exif individual enjoyed a natural lifespan of 200 years, with over a century of youth. After a life of fulfilled experiences, they would pass away peacefully, surrounded by descendants.
Even the capital market didn’t exist. It was essentially a utopia.
A civilization at the height of prosperity—almost exactly the future humanity had always dreamed of.
But in the next second—
War broke out.
On one of Exif’s extraterrestrial colonies, an astonishing flash of light erupted—so bright it could be seen clearly from space.
Such brilliance could only mean one thing: the destructive power at the explosion site was utterly unmatched.
Sure enough, the scroll shifted. The perspective changed to a ground-level view on the planet.
In what was once a massive supercity, a crater dozens of kilometers wide had flattened everything around it, taking countless Exif lives.
The explosion’s incredible force claimed tens of millions of lives.
And the culprit stood at the edge of the crater—a colossal beast, taller than the surrounding mountains.
The monster depicted in the scroll was alien in form, with eight legs and eight heads, unlike anything humans had ever seen.
And yet, every human delegate present could sense a familiar presence deep within the beast—a primal resemblance to Godzilla.
Yes, it was unmistakably a Monster.
The monster stood beside the crater, wreaking havoc on the remaining buildings.
Several minutes later, a few battleships in outer space fired ultra-high-energy lasers, finally killing it.
But in just those few minutes, the creature had reduced the vast city to ruins.
Scientists behind the cameras quickly ran some calculations, and the results made their scalps go numb.
According to their estimates, this beast—the one that had been effortlessly taken down by the Exif starships—was actually stronger than Godzilla.
Its destructive power far surpassed that of the King of Monsters.
And the Exif... had dealt with it with ease.
But then, just as the Exif civilization mourned their fallen on that first colony—another Monster appeared.
And another.
A second, then a third planet was attacked.
Each one stronger than the last.
The second planet’s monster took down a battleship and completely destroyed an entire city.
The third’s emerged, razed a city, then burrowed underground. By the time it was found, it was capable of battling entire fleets on equal footing.
Then came the final one—the Monster that emerged on Exif’s homeworld.
Its destruction exceeded the total devastation of the previous three combined.
Its battle with the Exif fleet shattered continental plates.
In total, four Monster appeared—one on each of the four planets.
The later they emerged, the more powerful they became.
And this—
“—is the Monster phenomena.”
The narration resumed.
“The Monster phenomena refers to an inevitable event experienced by every advanced civilization in the universe.”
“When a civilization reaches a certain point of development, their home planet will—without exception—birth entities that you refer to as Monster.”
“The cause of their emergence is still unknown.”
“But their power is proportional to the civilization’s advancement.”
“Their biology is beyond comprehension—what is clear is that they will only attack intelligent civilizations.”
“Their sole purpose: to completely annihilate the civilization on their planet.”
“And as they destroy, they grow stronger—evolving with the very civilizations they crush.”
“This... is the Monster phenomena—the greatest evil in this universe.”
“And it is the true reason for our escape.”
At this point, the previously emotionless narrator, for the first time, revealed a human emotion: anger.
