Volume 2 Chapter 103: The Cosmic Picture (Part 3)

The Monster phenomena—the greatest calamity a civilization can face.

It is something that occurs on every planet and to every civilization in this universe.

Once a civilization reaches a certain stage of development, the Monster phenomena will begin to manifest.

But what exactly is this “certain stage”?

For most civilizations, that remains a mystery.

It might occur after becoming an interstellar civilization—or it could strike while the species is still confined to a single planet, even before they’ve finished shaping their own environment.

There is no clear pattern, no consistent law.

This random, chaotic nature makes the Monster phenomena seem completely unpredictable to outsiders.

Even for wandering civilizations like the Exif and the Bilusaludo, their vast journeys through the cosmos have only yielded a handful of data points—barely reaching double digits.

With so little data, it’s nearly impossible to identify any statistical patterns.

For example, the Bilusaludo still haven’t discovered the exact trigger for the phenomenon. The sample size is simply too small.

But the Exif did.

“The Monster phenomena is born when a civilization’s mass—its total ecological footprint—surpasses the combined biomass of all other life on its planet. Once that happens…”

“The Monster phenomena begins.”

The alien envoy spoke slowly and deliberately, revealing to everyone present the standard for the emergence of the Monster phenomena, something even the Bilusaludo had only ever speculated about.

When the mass of a civilization—the people, their creations, everything that makes up their society exceeds the total biomass of the rest of the planet’s ecosystem, that’s when the creatures known as Monster will arise.

This explained why different civilizations triggered the phenomenon at different points in their development.

“If a civilization develops while other life has already declined, it will occur.”

“If the civilization causes a massive disaster during development, tipping the balance in its favor, it will occur.”

“Even if the civilization causes no harm to other life, and simply expands—only wishing to attain happiness for itself, it will still occur.”

“The Monster phenomena is the most unreasonable evil in this universe, it is the reason we all flee.”

That’s how the Exif envoy explained it.

And within his words, humanity found the truth they had long sought, the reason why Godzilla and Ghidorah exist.

“Once a Monster is born, it will destroy cities, and do everything in its power to devastate the ecosystem that supports the civilization.”

“All of you here today know this intimately.”

“As destruction unfolds, the Monster—these agents of ruin—grow stronger, as if blessed by some wholly unknowable entity.”

“Godzilla, Ghidorah… They both began this way. Weak at first—but as the phenomenon continued, they grew stronger and stronger, until no civilization could stand against them.”

Above the envoy, the floating scroll projected two contrasting scenes.

The first showed a newly born Monster.

By comparing it to the surrounding intact buildings, it was clear the creature wasn’t all that large.

The next scene, however, showed the ruins of a city.

The Monster stood at the center of the devastation, its body now tens or even hundreds of times larger—towering into the sky.

The scroll continued to evolve, showing the monster’s form changing further.

You can see in the projection that all buildings had collapsed, and the Monster’s size had grown to an unprecedented scale.

After reducing everything to ruins, the monster simply stood silently in the center of the devastation.

But on the ruined ground around it… something else had started to appear.

“Once a civilization is deemed unable to resist the Monster any longer, the Monster will begin to reproduce an ecosystem of its own in the ashes of the fallen society.”

“According to our final observations, this ecosystem will eventually spread across the entire planet—completely extinguishing the light of civilization.”

“This is the Monster phenomena. This is what Monster are.”

“Entities that feed on civilizations, evolving endlessly.”

“The disaster currently plaguing your planet—Godzilla—is the clearest manifestation of this phenomenon.”

The floating scroll finally faded.

But the images of the Monster’s evolution—its transformation from creature to cataclysm—were burned into the minds of everyone present.

So this… this is the Monster phenomena?

A force that grows stronger by destroying civilization, completely ignoring reason, logic, or morality.

Is this what humanity is fighting against now?

The delegates looked deeply grim.

Now they understood why Godzilla kept growing stronger.

The reason was simple—

Godzilla had destroyed enough civilization.

While the amount he had destroyed paled in comparison to the ruin wrought by Ghidorah and its Ghidorah's Wings, it was still enough to elevate Godzilla to such terrifying heights.

And when you think about it… this might be an unsolvable problem.

One official clutched their forehead in despair.

Godzilla had only destroyed Australia and the Far East to reach his current form, what if he were allowed to destroy even more?

He might evolve into something entirely beyond human comprehension, something so powerful that no method of resistance would be possible.

At that point, victory would be out of the question.

Everyone felt a flicker of grim relief.

Thankfully, the Exif and Bilusaludo had arrived at this critical moment.

If they hadn’t, humanity’s odds of defeating Godzilla would have been abysmally low.

Even with the plan they were preparing, if what the Exif said was true, and fully evolved Monster could shatter entire tectonic plates, then even if Godzilla was defeated, how many humans would survive that battle?

Probably so few that humanity would return to its second-lowest population in history.

President Ludwig let out a deep breath, partly in relief.

But then, something occurred to him, and his expression suddenly changed.

If the Monster phenomena was as unbeatable as the Exif scroll suggested, that might be true for humanity…

But not for the Exif and the Bilusaludo.

After all, they had clearly shown in their scrolls that they defeated the Monster on their worlds.

So, why did the Exif claim they fled because of the Monster phenomena?

Which meant…

“……”

“You’re not mistaken,” said the Exif ambassador.

“The ultimate end of the Monster phenomena… is the Demon Star.”

The final phase, the extreme of the Monster phenomena is something beyond any single monster.

It is a cosmic-level disaster.

The Demon Star.
