Volume 2 Chapter 115: Destoroyah - Arrival
The scent of death lingered on everyone present…
The officers who had broken into the underground facility first used drones to scan every room, trying to find any trace of the creature known as Destoroyah.
But they found nothing.
Bloodstains covered the floor, shattered lockers lay strewn about, and the underground laboratory was eerily silent.
Just an hour ago, many researchers had been working here. Now, not a single one remained.
Death filled the place.
. . . . .
Clack, clack, clack...
Growth, molting, and then the formation of a new form.
Having swallowed all the flesh it could, the new lifeform crawled along the ceiling, avoiding the surveillance cameras' gaze, moving toward where the people were.
Destoroyah was smart—very smart.
Smart enough to recognize human creations and understand their purposes.
It avoided the cameras without destroying them, because doing so would expose its path of movement. It did not want that; it would make the prey scatter and flee.
Sharpening its blade, it advanced toward its target.
Its figure never appeared on any monitor. The personnel in the surveillance room and others elsewhere had no idea that Destoroyah was already among them.
But they were about to find out.
In a room near the sealed-off area, a researcher was sitting and reading a book. He was completely unaware of the danger approaching, still believing that if Destoroyah arrived, the surveillance room would surely alert them in advance.
But they were wrong.
From the ceiling, a shadow crept forward, hanging upside down. Silent, it sliced open a portion of the wall and slipped into the room through a blind spot between human sight and camera view.
From the body of this alien lifeform, finer fragments emerged, spreading outward.
Meanwhile, Destoroyah’s main body exited the room and moved to the next, and then the next. It was spreading itself, expanding its reach.
It was gradually infecting the entire facility, and no one noticed.
The elevator leading to the surface moved up and down repeatedly. At the same time, the areas infected by Destoroyah grew steadily larger, until a critical threshold was reached.
BOOM!!
All the monitors in the area were simultaneously destroyed.
“Ahhh!! No! No! Don't come near me!!”
Cries, screams, and wails filled the underground facility in an instant. The dispersed swarm of creatures revealed themselves from the ceiling and pounced on the humans below.
Guns were useless against them. Even multiple consecutive shots to the same spot couldn’t penetrate their armor. Humanity could only wait helplessly to be slaughtered, their cries echoing through the underground halls.
At the same time, the main body of Destoroyah stopped hiding. It charged toward the place where the human scent was thickest—the surveillance room—intending to unleash a massacre.
"Destoroyah spotted!! How did it get onto the main corridor? We didn’t see it at all! Seal off that area! Evacuate quickly! It’s heading to where the most people are!"
"Report! All monitors in Sector C have been destroyed! Victims are already reported from there based on audio! It’s splitting there!"
The people in the surveillance room stared wide-eyed at the sudden appearance of Destoroyah and the abruptly blacked-out screens, their faces full of disbelief.
They had no idea how Destoroyah had escaped or arrived there—the monitors showed nothing!
And they had no way to understand how Destoroyah managed to destroy an entire sector’s surveillance system all at once. It was beyond comprehension.
What on earth was happening...
A bitter taste rose in everyone's mouths.
But now was not the time to dwell on that. They had to stop Destoroyah from breaking through—there was no time left to think carefully!
They hurriedly activated the isolation devices along the main corridor, simultaneously sealing off the entire Sector C.
Several alloy walls rose up, and the broadcast system began to announce that Destoroyah had destroyed all surveillance in Sector C, warning the survivors there to seek shelter in the safer parts of the sector.
"Attention all personnel, attention all personnel. The escaped specimen, Destoroyah, has infected Sector C. All survivors in Sector C, please immediately move to enclosed spaces. Do not stay where you are! Do not stay where you are!"
The broadcast repeatedly urged the people in Sector C to evacuate, while the display showed Destoroyah’s main body rapidly advancing toward them.
"At its current speed, it will reach us in 3 minutes and 20 seconds!"
Ka-cha!
The tips of its limbs, as sharp as the finest blades, sliced through large sections of alloy as easily as cutting through butter.
The alloy layers, designed to withstand armor-piercing rounds from heavy tanks, were as fragile as tofu before its carbon-hardened blades. These walls couldn’t stop the beast at all. Humanity had no way to stop this monster.
BANG!!
With the last edge cut through, the several-ton alloy slab was smashed aside by the creature behind it.
Next came the second wall, then the third. The defenses humanity prided themselves on proved completely useless, barely even buying them any time.
Destoroyah’s hideous figure was seared deeply into the minds of everyone in the surveillance room. They watched the monster that had stepped out of their nightmares, silently praying.
Praying that God, or some unknown being, might save them—and save the world.
"How much longer until the ground forces arrive?! That thing’s going to kill us all before then!"
Someone pounded the table heavily.
Others grabbed their backup weapons, staring unblinking at the screens, watching the monster’s advance.
Although there were multiple exits from the surveillance room, none of the humans here fled.
The creature could infect others and move with terrifying speed, scattering might actually lower their chances of survival. Staying together here, relying on the defensible terrain for a last stand, offered them slightly better odds at survival.
Everyone understood this, so they chose not to run, but to face it.
Ka-chak…
Another alloy door was sliced open—this was the final one before the surveillance room.
Now, Destoroyah stood right at the entrance, separated from the people inside by only a single wall.
Gulp
Swallowing hard, the humans raised their weapons, aiming at the door, waiting for the monster behind it to arrive.
