Volume 2 Chapter 128: Damocles

"All ineffective? The entire fleet of battleships armed with electromagnetic cannons was destroyed in an instant... What a monster."

"Didn’t we already anticipate this? The power of Godzilla… it’s beyond monstrous."

"What about the Bilusaludo and the Exif? Did they agree to our request?"

"Sir… The Exif said they cannot lend us their ships as carriers — because Godzilla possesses the ability to destroy them, they won’t stake everything on an uncertain victory."

"Understandable… What about the Bilusaludo?"

"The Bilusaludo… they said they will act when the time is right."

"When the time is right—?! Isn’t that just letting Godzilla wipe us all out?! Those bastards just want to sit back and watch, let Godzilla kill off a few billion more of us, and then swoop in to take Earth for themselves!"

"…"

"Minister Green, there’s no need to be so anxious."

"Didn’t we foresee this outcome long ago? Why else did we develop the Damocles System? Why did we let SkyNet operate within the experimental zone?"

"The enemy of humanity can only be defeated by humanity. As for the Bilusaludo, we shouldn’t place our hopes on them."

"Now then, let us proceed."

…

Humanity truly is impressive, to have developed something new in such a short span of time.

Godzilla-Earth glanced at the massive crater on its upper torso — more than ten meters wide and over twenty meters deep — left by the impact of four nuclear warheads. A strange emotion stirred in its ancient heart.

Though such damage was negligible to its current 600-meter, 40,000-ton form, the mere fact that humanity could breach its defenses was… notable.

Back when its structural durability was only a tenth of what it is now, humans were barely able to carve anything off it.

But now, as its durability had skyrocketed, the destructive power of human weapons had somehow increased as well.

Take this latest engagement as an example — humans had miniaturized electromagnetic railguns, mounted them onto warships, and shrunk down nuclear warheads to be shell-sized.

And they’d done all this… in just over a month.

Humans didn’t have status panels or a growth system like Godzilla-Earth did.

If it weren’t this powerful… if it couldn’t intercept their shells…

It might’ve already been repelled.

Godzilla-Earth’s Earth-Wide Radar clearly picked up the total munitions of the human fleet.

This time, they had brought over 1,000 shells, each with a nuclear yield of around 4 megatons.

If they were fired in coordinated waves and all landed on target—

It would die.

A continuous barrage of 1,000 nuclear shells, each 4 megatons, posed a far greater threat than a single 40-gigaton nuclear device.

The former, if all hit, would kill it.

The latter, even with a point-blank detonation, would only cause severe damage — not even pushing it close to death.

After all, the explosion triggered when Kaiser Ghidorah crashed into Earth was already of that magnitude, and even that couldn’t kill it.

If a single nuclear strike were to kill Godzilla-Earth, it would need to exceed 100 gigatons, and detonate at close range.

Currently, humans lack the means to deliver such a payload directly to Godzilla-Earth.

But—

They would have it soon.

It looked up at the sky.

This time, its gaze turned to the deep reaches of outer space — where a human-made system had already locked onto it.

“System fully operational.”

In orbit, thousands of kilometers above the Earth’s surface, a massive space station composed of several modular segments began to come alive.

“Now initiating trial launch. 10, 9, 8, 7…”

The mechanical countdown echoed through the New Eden Headquarter in South America. As the numbers ticked down on the main panel, tension saturated the room — everyone’s expression was grim and taut.

“6, 5, 4, 3…”

Facing Earth, the station’s laser-reflective shielding began to slide away, opening a path along the internal electromagnetic rails — aimed precisely at a target.

“2, 1…”

Launch!

Launch!

From the ground—

From the sky—

Two fundamentally different forces unleashed their strikes at the same moment.

ZSHHH!

The first to suffer damage was the one in the sky.

A supercharged energy beam sliced through the Pacific airspace, its power still unimaginably immense even after layer upon layer of atmospheric attenuation.

In an instant, the Damocles system — humanity’s ultimate doomsday weapon — was engulfed by a flood of light. Temperatures surpassing those of any nuclear weapon melted its shields.

Though the oblique angle meant the beam had to pass through far more atmosphere than a direct vertical strike, and though the reflective materials were multilayered and thick, the attack still severely damaged nearly half its defensive structure.

In the skies over South America, two new suns blazed in orbit. Then — like a meteor shower — fragments began to rain from the heavens.

Zsh zsh zsh…

Molten steel and melted plating floated in orbit. The ring-shaped space station’s gun barrel, facing Earth, now visibly warped and melted.

BOOM!

A silent explosion — the muzzle of Damocles had cracked open, losing its ability to fire.

Had Godzilla succeeded in destroying the weapon…?

CRACK

A barely perceptible sound.

In the thin vacuum of space, the damaged muzzle detached intentionally.

Once severed, it was pushed downward by a cluster of functioning micro-thrusters, descending into the atmosphere — where it burned up like a meteor.

Then, the rear segment of the barrel extended forward, becoming the new firing end. The previous reflective shield re-formed, sealing the station’s core weapon once again.

It hadn’t been destroyed…

To melt through reflective material measured in meters, after scattering through thousands of kilometers of atmosphere and at an oblique angle — was still beyond Godzilla-Earth’s power.

After all, laser energy has a limit. And Godzilla-Earth couldn’t manipulate space-time to perfectly focus it. No matter how powerful the beam, it had constraints.

It’s unable to shoot it down…

And now — beyond the sky — humanity’s weapon has entered the atmosphere.

Its velocity was staggering, already exceeding a thousand times the speed of sound!

The atmosphere tore at it furiously. Its outer layers peeled away, tail fins were shorn off, and yet — it maintained course.

Its target—

Australia!
