Volume 2 Chapter 129: The Second Generation Godzilla
The target is not Godzilla-Earth, but Australia!
Why is this? Why would it be like this?
Because humanity has long understood that Godzilla-Earth possesses the capability to strike into space!
Therefore, the Damocles System isn’t merely an electromagnetic rail accelerator. Humanity knew that in order to accelerate a nuclear warhead weighing tens of billions of tons to a speed beyond Godzilla-Earth’s breath attack interception capabilities, the system would need to be so massive that it could never survive an attack from Godzilla-Earth.
So, they chose another path.
The electromagnetic system only provided part of the velocity. What truly propelled the warhead to unimaginable speed—
—was another set of explosives!
By dividing the nuclear warhead into multiple segments, placing energy-absorbing plates in the mid-section, and sequentially detonating the rear warheads before reentry into the atmosphere, they were able to gain tremendous kinetic energy!
Only through this method could a projectile carrying a nuclear weapon of tens of billions of tons be accelerated to incredible speeds.
Only this way could it evade Godzilla-Earth’s breath attack!
Though they spoke of tens of billions of tons, the Damocles System's first test fire did not use such a yield.
It merely launched a "small" nuke with a yield of 100 million tons.
Compared to the system’s true stored firepower, it was utterly insignificant.
But even this “insignificant” strike was enough to inflict devastating damage upon the nascent Godzilla-Earth ecosystem!
So Godzilla-Earth, what will you do now? Will you use your crystal and unleash your maximum-power laser to intercept it?
Or will you let it fall, and raze the ecosystem you value so deeply to the ground?
Those who launched the attack were extremely tense at this moment. They didn’t know whether this would be enough to force Godzilla-Earth to retreat.
It has to work. It must work.
That’s what they kept thinking, praying, gripped by intense anxiety.
And while the humans who launched the attack were so nervous, Godzilla-Earth—the one under threat—was instead unnervingly calm.
Human technology… is truly remarkable.
Just a few dozen days ago, not even the overlapping shields of Ghidorah's Wings could withstand its laser. A massive portion would be vaporized instantly, sometimes even pierced clean through.
But humans… humans, within just a short span of time, had developed a defensive barrier that could block it…
Granted, due to the thick atmosphere, the Damocles System only received less than one-fifth the energy that Ghidorah's Wings had been hit with.
Granted, after atmospheric scattering, even that fifth of the energy was no longer focused but widely dispersed.
And yet—
They blocked it.
That fact alone spoke volumes.
Just a few dozen days ago, humans had no ability to defend themselves. In that short time, they built such a barrier and launched it into space.
Even if not on par with Ghidorah, never forget: humans were adapting in real-time, unlike the golden Monster who evolved over tens or even hundreds of thousands of years.
Dozens of days versus tens of thousands of years—that difference alone said everything.
And that’s not even mentioning that, alongside their defense, they built an offensive system to match.
A truly formidable species.
In East Asia, the mountain-like Godzilla-Earth could not help but offer genuine praise to this enemy—and at the same time, its radar had already locked onto the celestial projectile hurtling toward Australia.
Could it be destroyed?
Probably not.
If it were the same high-powered laser from earlier, it would surely be able to destroy it. But just moments ago, when Godzilla-Earth fired at the human Damocles System, it had already used up the focus crystals needed to sustain such high-energy blasts.
Back when it shot down Ghidorah's Wings, and during the battle with Kaiser Ghidorah, Godzilla-Earth had already exhausted all the crystals on its body used to support ultra-high-energy laser attacks.
Later, while recuperating underground, it focused all its resources on repairing its body. Otherwise, it wouldn’t even be able to fire the laser it had just used.
The synthesis of new crystals only began after it escaped the toxic sea zone caused by the Oxygen Destroyer. And in that short time, it hadn’t been able to produce many crystals—especially considering that its internal organs responsible for crystal production had suffered heavy damage during the battle with Kaiser Ghidorah. Production speed was far slower than before.
As a result, up to now, it had only managed to fire the petawatt-class laser once. After that, its maximum laser output was only in the terawatt range.
That’s already an incredible amount of power—but when facing the tens of thousands of kilometers of dense atmosphere, a few terawatts of laser energy were simply not enough to make contact with the target.
In truth, there was nothing Godzilla-Earth could do about the incoming projectile. It could only watch helplessly as it hurtled toward Australia.
And yet, Godzilla-Earth showed not a shred of concern.
Why?
Because—
It would intervene.
"Mama."
Thousands of miles away from where Godzilla-Earth stood, within the heart of its ecosystem, a colossal hundred-meter-tall beast looked up at the sky.
Linked to Godzilla-Earth, it was able to observe in real time the celestial projectile hurtling toward Earth at unbelievable speed!
Three thousand kilometers… two thousand… one thousand…
It opened its mouth.
Six hundred kilometers… three hundred…
Light began to gather inside its jaws.
Two hundred kilometers… one hundred kilometers!
The light burst forth.
The dark clouds in the sky were torn apart.
Above Australia, the celestial warhead that had been streaking toward the ecosystem exploded in the heavens just 0.2 seconds before impact.
The nuclear fireball born from a hundred-megaton explosion expanded outward—but never touched the ground.
A massive shockwave blasted in every direction. At such a close range, it should have annihilated all living beings and even toppled concrete buildings.
But the creatures within Godzilla-Earth's ecosystem were far stronger than steel. To them, such a shockwave was little more than a breeze.
Second Generation Godzilla closed its superheated jaws, its eyes watching the fireball from dozens of kilometers away. The corners of its mouth curled upward in a distinctly human-like gesture.
Yes—Godzilla-Earth could not intercept the warhead.
But the Second Generation Godzilla could.
Even though its laser was far weaker than Godzilla-Earth’s…
Godzilla-Earth had to fire through tens of thousands of kilometers of atmosphere to reach Australia. But the Second Generation Godzilla only needed to fire at the right moment—when the warhead was just dozens of kilometers away!
Unlike the Damocles System, the warhead had no meter-thick reflective armor. When struck by a terawatt-class laser, it couldn’t withstand it and detonated instantly.
Still dozens of kilometers away from the edge of the ecosystem, the 100-megaton nuclear missile was intercepted without causing any destruction.
Humanity’s plan to use Godzilla-Earth’s own ecosystem as leverage against it had completely failed.
In a command center in South America, the humans stared at satellite images of this new monster—and once again, fell into speechless silence.
