If I don't plan on doing the Lava base, do you think the paint scheme would still work?

I think the paint scheme will work but: 1) Metal reflections should be from your new light source, maybe from above (i.e. the Sun) or whatever. 2) The OSL from 22:26 with white ink on airbrush does not have sense if there is no lava. However!!! If your base do not have lave showing, it is not a problem, the lava could be physically painted but the miniature could be in Hell or in a Volcano where there is lava surrounding. In this case, change a little bit the direction of the reflection. Then you can follow the tutorial regardless
