Could a premixed wash like nuln oil give me the same effect? Yours seems to flow much easier into crevices.

Could be similar but you have to be more precise with nuln oil and you cannot erase mistakes. With oil paint you can correct, erase, modify, and flows better in the recesses. You should try, just buy some cheap multicolor oil paint box, those box for painting frames. I use the a lot, in faces, washing, rust effects, streaking lines..

And nuln oil cannot be mixed with whitespirit solvent. Acrílic base paint, like nuln oil are water based so its solvent must be water, medium, thinner Oil paint need other kind of solvents, like whitespirit and cannot mix with water
