You make a pit stop at your old childhood home to see your mom for Mother's Day. [3.6K words]

Very short...short haha! I wrote this for myself on Mother's Day to get a handle on MC's mom's personality when she's not just a voice at the other end of the phone. This is not an attempt to make her a sympathetic character MC needs to feel bad for but I do feel like depth doesn't automatically mean they're sympathetic. Just makes them more real.

I decide to codify it and expand on it to make it a short story :) It's pretty brief but I hope you enjoy!

WAHHH IM CRYING ON A MONDAY DANG IT AMY !!

Jam

Why did this one hurt more than anything related to the RO’s? Also, this one kinda gave insight to Mc’s parents’ relationship to each other, because what do you mean their dad went golfing when his wife popped a whole ass kid. Ungrateful fr lol.

jj

this one has a bit of a kick to it 🥲 i love it though!! it’s so cool that mc and their family have so much dimension it makes it easy to be emotionally invested in their story

Hanna

ooh this hurt

Illya Smith

I really feel like the mom was about to say that MC was an accident instead of handful/enough...

Bluevp

This left me in tears... How could you Amy 😭😭

" This is not an attempt to make her a sympathetic character MC needs to feel bad for," Amy says... me and my affection-starved MC: 😢 Maybe it's because I'm older (probably older than everyone here), but I get where the mom is coming from with MC and their music. She wants to see them succeed, but at the same time, the chances are slim to none (she's right, MC isn't the kid of someone "important" and doesn't have an "in") and she doesn't want her kid to be 45 years old and working at a minimum wage job, unable to support themself. When you're 20-something, it's hard to understand that concept. Well, not so much for my MC, because she's pessimistic as hell, but you get my drift. Good job, though. You made me kinda like the mom (or at least understand and sympathize with her), and I didn't think you could! I doubt you could manage it with the dad. :-P

The start of this felt really depressing. By the end of this my eyes had water and I'm not even sure what emotion I was feeling. I really hope we to explore the family aspect a bit more in the main game. I really enjoyed this short. Thanks Amy!

koma

This was a punch to the gut

lilahhhhhhhhh

ok this one got a little kick in it...

Elizabeth

Theres literaly something in the air making my eyes water I swear

Tweedle Dee

It's so well written that no matter what the characters being so unsatisfied just bleeds through. Ugh. What a headspace to be in.

Roman

The way that MC defaults to feeling like their not enough/too much 😭😭😭

Niamh

Ahhhh!! The part where the mom mentions not feeling connected to her child when they were small the way she expected and the MC preferring their dad and how you can see she held that insecurity for so long... like Real Mom Feels™️.

I love this so much because relationships like that with your family are never black and white. It's such a complicated grey area when they're not completely awful people, just not that great at being parents. It stirs up a difficult emotion because it's very easy to resent them, but sometimes it's even hard to do that when, at the end of the day, they're still your parents. A lot of the time you hope for things to change and be different even after all that time, when deep down you know they never will. I also know that everyone has different feelings and reactions to that kind of thing, and I really like how you've handled that spectrum of how we can choose to feel about it

gombocman

I can't believe you've done this.

vi.ravlyk

NOOO, WELL NOW I FEEL KINDA TERRIBLE FOR CHOOSING INDIFFERENT/SNAPPY CHOICES WITH MOM IN THE MAIN GAME…… 😭😭 i’m soooo curious what will happen when the family stuff gonna appear in the future, i’m (not) ready for the angst omg 🥲

amanda

"Is that it? Has she tried so hard not to be like her parents that she turned into them? Became the one thing she did not want to be?" amy you killed me again ⚰️

Queen Zelda

Ugh, AMY, what are you doing to meeeee? :O now I like MC's mom, she feels much more interesting as human being and not only a stoic mother with not much feelings. You are doing such an amazing job with all the snippets and the story. Can't wait to read the second chapter :3

I kinda get what the mom says about MC's career in music... But really, the most important thing would have been to focus on the bond with your child. I wonder why they were so absent. I kinda understand why the mom was absent because it's on her nature (this is what the MC says and I know it's biased) but the dad? Why is the dad absent too?
