Hey Sage, new patron! So the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead are three of my favourite bands of all time and your Kid A reaction got me to subscribe! Wanted to add for The Strokes, I’d really recommend the MTV Live at the $2 Bill concert, it’s my second favourite live performance of all time (after Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads), it was the live performance that basically made the Strokes’ career and what caused them to blow up. I’ve literally seen video essays on it examining it’s cultural impact. We most likely don’t have the Arctic Monkeys, the Killers or most alt/indie rock bands of the 2000’s without that concert. The performance changed a decade of music and also, honestly after watching changed my opinion on multiple songs from Is This It. Also to clarify the Arctic Monkeys comparison, it comes from Alex Turner (AM lead singer) himself, even making its way into the lyrics of AM songs referencing the Strokes. The Strokes basically invented the garage indie rock revival of the early 2000s that is the genre that AM start in. The early Arctic Monkeys are basically some young Sheffield guys trying to be the Strokes with their UK spin

The part of reptilia you like is just them sliding around a shape (They kinda move one or two notes around but basically the same). The strokes basically influenced several bands/artists either by inspiring them to start making music or in sound or in the fact that their success made labels sign a shit ton of bands/artists. Arctic monkeys are definitely more garage rock and you can hear in some of their first album's songs that Alex has distortion on his voice like Julian from the strokes. The lyrics I'd say aren't incredibly meaningful really. The 5 second silences between every song was added intentionally but I forgot why.

This album is dangerously hypnotic. Most of the songs do not hit on first listen, but grow on you fast. They definitely laced something in the riffs. Automatic stop’s chorus is dangerous

Pleaseeee do Comedown Machine next! It's the best in my opinion, and has lots of experimentation in their sound

Josh

That’s my favourite too

Ayee welcome bro! I appreciate the comment too, I'll have to look that performance up. Do you remember what the video essays were called too? I wanna find those as well!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVowBqdnlSg (Here is a link to the best copy of the performance, it includes some grainy footage of the the warm up songs they performed that were filmed but not aired on MTV, and the entirety of the aired concert on MTV that causes The Strokes to blow up in the US) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9U5ad3Ytkk (I found one of the video essays that examines the concert and its impact and *why* it had the impact it did. Also some fun mentions of other bands you're covering and their reaction/connection to the Strokes in this era)

Thank you! Figured since this was a band/area I know a decent amount about I'd leave a comment given it could help if you cover future Strokes albums and honestly could come up in future Arctic Monkeys videos as well. Sent another comment with the links to the concert and one of the video essays!

That's become my 2nd favorite strokes album, after Is This It? Some of my favorite vocal performances by Julian are on that album.
