Brian Wilson basically went insane shortly after this

Blueboy

Glad you enjoyed this overall Sage! You had some insightful thoughts. I really enjoy this album; lush and layered instrumentals, emotional vocals and harmonies, introspective lyrics, etc. On the topic of American bands that sound like The Beatles and even had songs on the charts, The Byrds and The Monkees are two contenders you should maybe give a listen to. Both have great songs imo.

Paul McCartney has said God only knows is the best song he's ever heard

Morgan George Roberts

If you're doing any more Beach Boys, I'd recommend Sunflower, Surf's Up, and The Smile Sessions!

Uriko100

God Only Knows is the influencer for Here, There and Everywhere that Paul McCartney wrote for Revolver. The Beatles also used the Beach Boys harmonies methods. Brian Wilson took some ideas from Rubber Soul and the Beatles took some ideas from Pet Sound to Revolver and Pepper. When Wilson heard Strawberry Fields Forever he went totally insane and scraped the project he was working on called Smile. He come back to it only in the 2000s You should definitely do a video for it. its a masterpiece https://open.spotify.com/album/4Uc6YCjpfyjj02rZfg2EUv?si=d5r9ga8VR1q-R2CYZcLZGA

“Not the grits!” Ha. Interesting take. I find this album doesn’t hit people that hard on first listen but it’s so layered. As you pointed out, I love that they don’t take the easy option with their note choices and take songs in new directions. God only knows is an absolute banger though.

Bryan Suarez

The song pet sounds was actually made with the intention of having it be the theme of a James Bond movie haha, you gotta do smile sessions now, way more experimental but essentially it was meant to be their sgt peppers, it was abandoned but smile sessions does a great job at showing what it could have been

Also recommend doing the album Arthur by the Kinks it’s an incredible album from 1969 and possibly the precursor to all the britpop you’ve listened to, especially blur who were very influenced by that era of the kinks discography

J

I find this album and band so hideously offputting personally and never quite understood why as they're obviously incredible it just physically pains me on some tracks

Connor Mayo

imo there's no band that actually competes with The Beatles and their influence. The Rolling Stones vs The Beatles thing that has been spoken about for years is just two bands being very big at the same time and being compared. The Beach Boys definitely had more of a claim to being their "rivals" due to both bands pushing each other to make better and better music in a certain period

Jim

What a bummer if you'd missed "Caroline, No"!

SL

I get why they’re popular and innovative but they’re just not my thing

SL

Agreed that the drums are super interesting. Very different from most rock and popular music in general

Camity

Is that auto focus that keeps focusing on the stuffy toy on his couch?

Derek Dugan

Huge kinks fan here too. There's several that I'd love to hear reviewed

Gerard McCartan

I completely agree. Super talented but just clicking with me either.

Brandon ghgghh

this dude consistently dislikes some of my favourite songs on albums

Wy

Such a great album man. Interesting how u find the sound to be so high quality because I've always thought something like Sgt Pepper sounds way more hi-fidelity. I almost think that the "crispiness" u like is actually because the microphones are a little bit lower quality than what they had in Abbey Road studios at the time. Almost has the motown sound. ✌️

Wy

If u want to react to my album I'll send u a free cd when it comes out this summer lol

Wy

Fun fact also the title track was originally written for James Bond so u were right about the cinematic aspect fs

Sage is Typing...

Ohhh interesting! Maybe they had some extra distortion or something like that?

Sage is Typing...

That would be dope I’ve been wanting to do a stream or video where i check out music from people in the community

Wy

Love it dude just tell me when!

Bryan Suarez

Hell yea! I’m loving your reactions, it’s so cool seeing you like songs that others maybe don’t like and vice versa, super refreshing.

Justin Morgan

Very fitting that you reacted to this before Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Who Built The Moon? as it is heavily inspired by Pet Sounds.

The Taker

The “rivalry” between The Beach Boys and The Beatles really took off around Rubber Soul and went through Sgt. Pepper. It wasn’t a direct rivalry, more like they kept pushing each other creatively. Brian Wilson was inspired by Rubber Soul, which led to Pet Sounds. That album then influenced The Beatles, especially on Revolver and Sgt. Pepper. The Beatles were blown away by the song Good Vibrations, while Brian Wilson felt overwhelmed after hearing Strawberry Fields Forever. Around that time, he lost confidence in Smile and eventually shelved it. Years later, it came out as The Smile Sessions, and it really makes you wonder what could’ve been if it had dropped in 1967
