Hi!

The title of the overthinker of the month goes to… yours truly! I mean, to me. It goes to me.

I edited this video more than a month ago and just let it sit on my hard drive for all this time!

Actually I went to the point where thought I’d never share it anyway.

Why?

Because it’s not perfect or at least it didn’t turned out as I imagined.

The light changes in this video (it gets a bit dark for a few minutes but you can still clearly see what I’m doing. It just doesn’t look perfect and my hand casts shadows, but I promise, it’s like this only in a small fraction of the video)

Plus it’s quite a long one and I wanted to record a voiceover to it, not because I’d have anything particularly interesting to say, just to make it more watchable (is that even a word?) I guess?

But seriously, what’s wrong with a long video with just the music in the background? (yes, I’m thinking out loud)

Also got quite attached to the idea of posting ā€œthemedā€ videos, so I’d need to post a hydrangea drawing process and I haven’t record any due to the constantly clouded sky.

Hello, I'm calling the art police! Why am I making up all these weird rules??

Anyway! About the video:

It’s a chill, slow video. The drawing process is almost real-time.

I only edited out some moments where I color one area in one color - where basically not much is happening.

Other than that, it’s a very organic, real, raw drawing process.

The one where I change colors and mediums a lot and draw over the same area several times.

While drawing these peonies, I didn’t use any reference photo, I didn’t sketch beforehand. I was drawing without any plan. You might noticed some peony sketches on my desk but these were more of an emotional support (lol) than the actual reference.

The video has an instrumental music on the background. Feel free to watch it on mute if you prefer!

Here's the list of colors I used for this illustration:

I could easily use maybe half of them but I was picking them on the go. Usually I choose colors before starting an illustration but this time I wanted to challenge myself!

Okay, but what about being an overthinker?

Well, it wasn’t only about whether I should post this video or not.

The fact that I didn’t post it in January, made me spiraling over posting other things.

Like, how can I post other rewards or post something more casual, like sketchbook stuff, while I haven’t posted a video yet?!!

Omg, this is so embarrassing to say, but it is what it is.

I can only apologize for keeping you waiting for rewards and updates!

I’ll catch up on that these next 1-3 days and then keep going with the next theme.

It feels so nice to get out of my head.

I hope you’ll enjoy this video!

If you have any questions about my drawing process, like for example, why I did X or how I made Y, what do I think about Z, feel free to ask!

Much love

Marta

It’s beautiful and there is nothing to be embarrassed about.ā™„ļøšŸ„°

Honestly, I didn't even notice the light changing in the video and I don't usually listen to voiceover (I watch with no audio at x2 speed cause I have very little time), all I care about is learning from you ;D And I learned a lot, your technique with markers is perfect for what I'm trying to achieve in my bullet journal, can't wait to try it out!

muiri

Yayy!! I'm glad you do! ♄ and I'm glad I ended up sharing this video :D

muiri

Thank you so much Martina! ♄ I know! I'm embarrassed just because I supposed to post a video in January, while I did it a few days later. Which I guess is not that much of a big deal but I just didn't meet my own deadlines and it's not a great feeling! It's just a feeling though, so it will pass. I hope you enjoy this video!

muiri

Omg, really!? All this overthinking, spiraling and trying to make things to be absolutely perfect, while all of these ā€œflawsā€ were just in my head all this time, lol! (I mean, I know they’re there but they have much less meaning than I thought) I’m soooo happy you find this video valuable! Oooo!! Do you use alcohol based markers or water based markers in your bullet journal?! I’d love to get more into journalling this year so I wanna know eeeeverything!! :D (I do journal regularly but more in ā€œdear diaryā€ style. I’d love to get into more aesthetic way of journalling, you know, making themed spread and all this fun stuff!) Thanks for your feedback Laura!! It means A LOT ♄

Laustar

I know the feeling of seeing flaws in my work even when other people don't! :) I'm still new to journalling, I have both water based and alcohol based markers, so I guess I'll try your technique with both and see what works best on my journal's paper (it's watercolor paper 200gsm). One of the reasons I found you and suscribed to your patreon is to use your stickers in a monthly spread, I'll tag you on insta when I do :)

Martina Birkoben

You do a really good job 🄰seeing the way you work teaches me a lot! Thank you😘

muiri

I'm happy to hear that!! ♄

Thanks for sharing!! I’m also super new to this :D What kind of journal is that? I saw a lot journals with 100-120gsm paper but nothing as thick as 200! Is that a journal with dotted pages or do you use like a regular sketchbook as a journal? I asked about using alcohol based markers because this medium seems to bleed through the back of the page even on the super thick paper. The thickest I’ve ever tried was 180gsm bristol paper and well, it did bleed through, especially the darker colors. I think it could handle a single layer, maybe two layers of this kind of ink without affecting the back side of the page but that’s just a speculation. So yeah, I guess using these markers for simpler doodles could actually work?! Please let me know once you try alcohol based markers in your journal! ♄ I see many people using water based markers (like Tombow) in their journals and I’m going to try these since the paper in my journal is as thick as in yours. Hahh omg, there’s so many questions and speculations. I hope I’m not being nosy here (ok, I’m kinda am but I hope you don’t mind :D) Also, I’m honored you’d be using Patreon stickers in your journal!!! ♄

Laustar

It's an Archer&Olive journal with watercolour paper (no dots), and it's going to be my reading journal :) It only has 64 pages but it's perfect to record what I read every month and make some art out of it. But yes, alcohol markers are probably going to bleed through anyway, I'll let you know once I swatch them! Tombow markers are fantastic, they don't bleed through even with thin paper, but they are also very expensive šŸ˜…ā€‹ There are other cheaper brands of waterbased markers but they are not as good in my opinion. If you try them, I would love to see the results! :D

What kind of equipment do you use to record? How do you position your camera? I have been going thru your videos, and it is so satisfying to watch. It did make me wonder tho what is your set-up like. I dont have the best posture when I do traditional art so when I try to record from above, it always ends up recording part of my hair/head haha. Over this week, I will be practicing some leaves from your printables and just enjoy myself! I love all the content so far and I rly am looking forward to being able to upgrade the tier <3

muiri

Oh! My recording equipment is quite emberrassingly bad! :D I use my phone to record, it’s a 4yo Android smartphone so definitely nothing fancy. It kept crashing when I was trying to record video for this month so maybe it’s time for an upgrade! As for positioning my phone - I don’t have any special phone holder/arm that would allow me to record from above! I set a phone on a DIY construction made of an old (and useless) camera tripod and a tape! It’s quite hard to explain. I’ll share some pictures in a separate post. I need to be really conscious of my posture so I don’t record my hair and/or move that construction :D Yayy!! Have fun practicing! Thank you so much for your support! ♄

Megiia Bi

Oh this is feels good! I myself record with my phone too. Seeing how great your content quality is makes me happy, cuz now for sure I know one does not need fancy stuff to provide great art. I have another question tho now haha. How did you manage to record on your phone so the video is not Instagram story like, but 16:9?

muiri

I think it's all about the good light! The nice natural light improves the quality of any video. Of course there are also other lighting options (like for example ring lights) but personally I can’t use any artificial light properly :D Hmm! I just flip my phone and record the whole thing horizontally, so the video is 9:16, if that makes sense!

Megiia Bi

Thanks Muiri!!! Gonna try out some leaves now <3 Got "some" sun today so I will try to take advantage hihi

Luminous

I am I love with your art, would be wonderful if you share your knowledge with us in terms of drawing leaves and flowers since it difficult to draw them so dynamic and not get overwhelmed with all details of the shapes and light & shadow
