one thing 1:02 the thing nikki said that maomao is the highest lady in waiting is false. Maomao is the lowest lady in waiting, yes she has skills but in the hierarchy she is the lowest from them. the others are from much powerful families. every lady in waiting (for high concubines at least) are from rich and powerful families. and maomao is from lowly birth. and little side note all of the lady in waiting at lady gyokuyou place are from the same hometown and close to lady gyokuyou to minimize the danger. and with the hairpins: yes you have to an extend right like you two figured out last episode the hair pin jinshi gave is somewhat in a romantical meaning. but i can mean other things too, like "i trust this person and i look after her" or somewhat like for erverybody to see that she gaind the trust of a high offical or high concubine she would treated better when people know that shes trusted by someone powerful. it can also be an exchange for an favor.
